Beperkingen onderzoek - Het verschil in opvoedingsgedrag tussen vaders en moeders en de rol van

Dit onderzoek heeft zoveel mogelijk rekening proberen te houden met de ecologische validiteit door taken zowel in het lab als in de thuissituatie af te nemen voor zowel het opvoedingsgedrag als sociale angst. Het heeft echter een aantal beperkingen. De eerste beperking van het onderzoek is dat sociale angst bij het kind enkel gemeten is in interactie met volwassenen. Toekomstig onderzoek zal de diagnostische criteria voor sociale fobie (DSM-IV) wellicht beter kunnen integreren door sociale angst ook te meten in interactie met leeftijdsgenoten (Verhulst et al., 2007). De resultaten uit het onderzoek van Rubin, Burgess, en Hastings (2002) wijzen uit dat kleuters die sociaal terughoudend en behoedzaam gedrag vertoonden in de nabijheid van hun peers, dit gedrag ook op jongere leeftijd vertoonden. Dit betekent dat sociaal terughoudend en behoedzaam gedrag tijdens interactie met leeftijdgenoten, in de peutertijd, een voorspeller kan zijn van sociale angst op latere leeftijd. Een tweede beperking van dit onderzoek was het construct opdringerig opvoedingsgedrag, en wel om twee redenen. Ten eerste was de ecologische validiteit laag bij opdringerig

31 opvoedingsgedrag omdat alleen die taken binnen een laboratorium setting zijn meegenomen en ten tweede betreft het het lage aantal taken dat is gebruikt om opdringerig opvoedingsgedrag te meten. Dit onderzoek biedt daarom te weinig houvast om conclusies te verbinden aan de rol van opdringerig opvoedingsgedrag en de invloed daarvan op sociale angst. Voor toekomstig onderzoek is het van belang dat een duidelijke definitie van opdringerig opvoedingsgedrag wordt geformuleerd. Een derde beperking van dit onderzoek is het gegeven dat de onderzoeksgroep voornamelijk bestond uit hoog opgeleiden uit dezelfde regio. Dit beperkt de mogelijkheid tot generalisatie van de resultaten. Tenslotte, de vierde beperking binnen dit onderzoek is dat opvoedingsgedrag van ouders en sociale angst van het kind enkel gemeten is door middel van observaties. Mogelijk dat de variabelen betrouwbaarder en vollediger in beeld kunnen worden gebracht wanneer gebruik wordt gemaakt van zowel ouderrapportages als observaties (Hoyle, Harris, & Judd, 2002).

Resultaten uit dit longitudinale onderzoek wijzen uit dat er een verschil bestaat in overbeschermend opvoedingsgedrag tussen vaders en moeders in de vroege kindertijd; moeders vertonen meer overbeschermend opvoedingsgedrag. Dit verschil wordt niet gevonden voor uitdagend en opdringerig opvoedingsgedrag. Toekomstig onderzoek moet uitwijzen of dit te maken heeft met de vervaging van de stereotype opvoedingsrollen. Uitdagend opvoedingsgedrag van vaders lijkt een protectieve factor te zijn in de ontwikkeling van sociale angst bij het kind en zal dus speciale aandacht behoeven bij het formuleren van preventieve interventiestrategieën.
