Binnen dit onderzoek zijn een aantal beperkingen van toepassing. Allereerst de definitie van de kwalititeit van Integrated reporting. De kwaliteit wordt gemeten aan de hand van de mate

van toelichting door middel van een disclosure index. Dit is één van de onderzoeksmethode die op een semi-objectieve manier de kwaliteit meet van een verslag. De kwaliteit is immers nog niet op geheel objectieve wijze vast te stellen. Aangezien er nog geen wettelijke inkadering is met wat er beschreven moet zijn in een integrated of duurzaamheids report is er sprake van enige subjectiviteit in de keuzes voor de gebruikte KPI’s. Dit risico is zoveel mogelijk gemitigeerd door de verschillende aspecten die door meerdere richtlijnen worden geïdentificeerd met elkaar te vergelijken. Daarnaast zijn er alleen maar KPI’s meegenomen omtrent de natural en human capital in plaats van alle zes. Ook in het toekennen van punten op de aspecten van de disclosure index zit enige in subjectiviteit verborgen. Op zichzelf zou dit vrij makkelijk moeten kunnen. Een aspect is immers aanwezig of niet, waardoor er één of nul punten toegekend kunnen worden. In de praktijk viel dit toch tegen. Dit omdat in veel jaarverslagen geen vaste richtlijn gebruikt wordt en daardoor zijn deze vaak erg verschillend in structuur, taalgebruik en toelichting. Om de subjectiviteit en variatie in het toekennen van punten te verminderen zijn de eerste tien verslagen twee keer te beoordeeld. Verder is het bij integrated reporting van belang dat de onderneming inzicht geeft over de samenhang tussen de productiefactoren (IIRC, 2013b). Doordat in de populatie ook duurzaamheids- en gecombineerde verslagen zitten heeft dit waarschijnlijk nog maar weinig resultaat. Ook het meetbaar maken van de samenhang zal lastig zijn. De samenhang van de productiefactoren is daarom niet meegenomen. Ook bij het identificeren van het soort verslag zit enige mate van subjectiviteit in verborgen, aangezien een duidelijke, vaste, overkoepelende definitie ontbreekt. In de bijlage is daarom opgenomen wanneer een verslag tot een integrated report wordt toegerekend. Verder zijn er maar een aantal sectoren, aansluitend aan de natural en de human capital meegenomen en is er alleen gekeken naar Europese landen. Hierbij is niet gekeken naar eventuele verschillen tussen de landen waar de onderneming gevestigd is. Als laatst is er bij het omrekenen naar Euro’s gebruik gemaakt van de wisselkoers per 31/12/2013, terwijl een aantal ondernemingen een gebroken boekjaar hebben. Over het algemeen zijn de valuta’s waarin de ondernemingen rapporteren redelijk stabiel, waardoor geen grote verschillen te verwachten zijn.
5.3 Vervolgonderzoek
Aan de hand van de verkregen resultaten en de omschreven beperkingen zou er vervolgonderzoek kunnen plaatsvinden. Allereerst zou de kwaliteit aan de hand van meerdere onderzoeksmethode(n) herhaald kunnen worden. Het combineren van de beschikbare semi- objectieve onderzoeksmethoden (zie paragraaf 3.2) leidt tot een meer objectieve manier om de kwaliteit te meten. Hierdoor zouden de uitkomsten nog beter reproduceerbaar zijn. Verder is integrated reporting nog volop in ontwikkeling en het gebruik hiervan zal naar verwachting de aankomende jaren groeien. In de toekomst zou dit onderzoek opnieuw kunnen plaatsvinden met een dataset die volledig bestaat uit geïntegreerde rapporten. De ontwikkeling (grote dataset geïntegreerde rapporten) zou wellicht ook inzicht geven in de gebruikte richtlijn en de verschillen in kwaliteit van de rapporten. Ook zou het onderzoek te verbeteren zijn wanneer subjectieve elementen die in 5.2 geïdentificeerd, zijn vervangen worden door objectievere elementen. Voorbeelden hierbij zouden verplichte regelgeving in landen zijn omtrent duurzaamheidsverslaggeving of integrated reporting. Daarnaast is het wellicht interessant om te vergelijken wat het verschil is van kwaliteit van geintegreerde rapporten wanneer deze vrijwillig of verplicht is. Ook zou er voor het meest opvallende resultaat dat de financiële resultaten een negatief verband hebben op de mate van toelichting met andere proxies berekend kunnen worden. Zo zou kunnen worden vastgesteld of met andere instrumenten dezelfde conclusies getrokken kunnen worden. De financiële prestaties zouden dan bijvoorbeeld door middel van de return-on-equity of de market-to-book ratio berekend kunnen

worden. Als laatst zou er bij de tweede hypothese, waar geen significantie relatie werd gevonden, de proxy grootaandeelhouders nog kunnen worden opgesplitst naar publieke en private grootaandeelhouders.
