Vanuit de theorie worden de volgende factoren als een belangrijk onderdeel gezien in de voorbereiding op maatschappelijke participatie: vaste structuur, gedragsverandering en de relatie tussen de pedagogisch medewerker en de jongere. Echter, in huidig onderzoek komt naar voren dat jongeren de meeste waarde hechten aan het hebben van een hechte band met pedagogisch medewerkers en dat andere zaken hierna pas prioriteit hebben. De huidige handelswijze met betrekking tot de begeleiding van jongeren die uit zullen stromen uit een residentiële instelling, zal zich dus meer moeten richten op het creëren van een hechte band met de jongeren. De eerste stap hierin is, bewustwording creëren bij pedagogisch

medewerkers met betrekking tot het opbouwen van een band. Vervolgens kunnen er

trainingen gegeven worden waarin aandacht wordt besteed aan skills die makkelijk toegepast kunnen worden, maar een groot verschil kunnen maken, zoals actief luisteren en een open houding aannemen. De tweede stap hierin heeft betrekking op de organisatie van de residentiële instellingen. In het beleid moet opgenomen worden dat er verplicht

tussenevaluaties ingepland moeten worden. Op deze manier heeft de jongere een standaard moment met een pedagogisch medewerker. Tijdens deze momenten kunnen zij elkaar beter leren kennen en heeft de jongere de mogelijkheid om vragen te stellen. Daarnaast kan de voortgang van de jongere gemonitord worden en kunnen er snel stappen ondernomen worden wanneer gestelde doelen bijvoorbeeld niet haalbaar zijn. Tevens is het voor de jongere duidelijk hoe hij/zij er op dat moment voorstaat. Hierdoor wordt de jongere actief betrokken, waardoor jongeren meer eigen regie krijgen en daarmee de behandelmotivatie vergroot kan worden.
