Aanbevelingen voor de onderwijspraktijk

Eerdere onderzoeken naar digitaal burgerschap richtten zich voornamelijk op de

onderwijscontext. Hierbij dachten onderzoekers bijvoorbeeld na over welke onderwerpen van digitaal burgerschap de aandacht dienden te krijgen binnen het onderwijs (e.g. Ribble, 2011). Er is echter nog weinig inzicht in het competentieniveau van leerlingen. Binnen de

onderwijscontext is het wel belangrijk om aan te sluiten op de competenties van leerlingen om op die manier te zorgen voor een doorgaande ontwikkeling (Huisman et al., 2017). Een aanbeveling voor de onderwijspraktijk is dan ook om een instrument in te zetten dat de digitale burgerschapscompetenties van leerlingen meet om op die manier onderwijs activiteiten aan te laten sluiten op de ontwikkeling van leerlingen. Hiervoor kan gebruik worden gemaakt van de ontwikkelde vragenlijst uit dit onderzoek.

Daarnaast komt uit het onderzoek naar voren dat het geslacht en de mate ouderlijk toezicht samenhangen met de digitale burgerschapscompetenties. Binnen de onderwijscontext is het niet wenselijk dat kenmerken van leerlingen van invloed zijn op de onderwijsprestaties. Activiteiten op scholen dienen er daarom op gericht te zijn de verschillen in geslacht te verkleinen en daarbij extra aandacht te geven aan de ontwikkeling van de competenties van jongens. Tot slot kan het voor scholen goed zijn om inzicht te hebben in de mate van ouderlijk toezicht op wat leerlingen doen in de digitale wereld en ouders te informeren over hun rol in het kader van digitaal burgerschap.
