ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The completion of this dissertation is thanks in large part to the special people who challenged, supported, and stuck with me along the way.

My deep gratitude goes first to Prof. dr. Henk J. Busscher, who kindly offered me the chance to conduct research in his group and who expertly guided me through my three years’ study. His unwavering enthusiasm for the research constantly engaged with my research, and his personal generosity helped make my time at UMCG enjoyable.

Also, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor Prof. dr. Henny C. van der Mei for the continuous support of my Ph.D. study and research, for her patience, motivation, enthusiasm, and immense knowledge. Her guidance helped me in all the time of research and writing of this thesis. I could not have imagined having a better advisor and mentor for my Ph.D. study.

I would like to express my deep and sincere gratitude to Prof. dr. Yijin Ren. Her dynamism, vision, sincerity and motivation have deeply inspired me. She has taught me the methodology to carry out the research and to present the research works as clearly as possible.

My sincere gratitude to Prof. dr. Linqi Shi. I am extremely grateful for what he has offered me. I would also like to thank him for his friendship, empathy, engagement during the hard time, and powerful, continuous supports. It was a great privilege and honor to work and study under his guidance.

Besides my advisors, I would like to thank the reading committee of my thesis: Prof. Hong Chen, Prof. Philip H. Elsinga, and Prof. Wim J. Quax, for their comments and suggestions which made this thesis better.

I would like to acknowledge Theo, Brandon, Parick, Prashant, Jelmer, Inge, and Romana for their helpful, constructive and creative discussions during lunch meeting and Kolff days. Their skilled, professional and broad knowledge vision have greatly impressed me.

Special thanks to Jelly and Gésinda for being my personal coach and their daily experimental support, Ina and Way for the financial and administrative support, Ed for both hardware and software support, Besty for ordering and bacterial strain preparation. Marja, Joop, Minnie, Willem, Willy, Hans, and Reinier for their technical supports
