Acknowledgements
Somehow this thesis has finally come to an end. I’ve spent many months writing it, and the entire time I was looking forward to the moment I would write the acknowledgements. So let’s get started.
Of course, I would not be here without my promoters. Bert, I think you’ve seen me at my scientific (and personal) best and worst over these years, but I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. Your enthusiasm for science is contagious; whenever I went into your office with a bad result, I would leave with 10 new ideas to pursue and a motivation. This has been invaluable over the years, so thank you for this. Dirk, you’ve always been there to answer a scientific question when Bert was otherwise occupied or when I needed another opinion on a problem, or for the occasional hallway chat. I’m glad you were willing and able to take part as a mentor at my GRS in Ventura, and the role suited you so well. I’d like to thank the Assessment Committee for their time and efforts in evaluating my the-sis: Ton van Maris, Dick Janssen, and Arnold Driessen. Also, I’d like to thank Edmund
Kunji for taking the time to travel from the UK for my defense. Our collaboration in
or-ganizing the GRC/GRS in Ventura was a valuable experience for my career development, and taught me many things. However, I won’t miss the four-way Skype calls and will never understand why Alessio was unable to have a high-speed connection for any of them. I would not have made it through the process of thesis writing without the constant sup-port (and distraction) of my two fantastic paranymphs, mi gente, Patri and Michele.
Pa-tatina, we were colleagues for a long time before we became BBFs (whatever that means).
You are such a caring and insightful person, and I value our friendship immensely. Thank you so much for teaching me all the worst parts of Spanish culture and language; I now know exactly what your mother, your dead relatives, and milk have in common. But above all we’ve gossiped…a lot. And we have so many inside jokes now. I’d say at least 80% are inside jokes…maybe 85%…
Michele, I’ve never become so close to someone in such a short time. I’ve known you for
only six months but you’ve somehow become one of my closest friends already. So many long conversations at the bar near my house, at lunch, or anywhere. You’re a wonderful human being and a paradoxical italiano, and I love it (and so did the four eavesdropping Germans at Pasta Fabriek). I look forward to seeing Trani someday soon. I hope that I eventually learn more of the lyrics in Albachiara than only “particolare”, or at least some phrases in Italian that won’t get me in trouble.
Chapter 3 of this thesis was only possible because of the excellent collaboration with the Industrial Microbiology group at TU Delft. Sophie, you arrived late in the project but I’m excited you were able to see the evolution story from the start. I’m looking forward to seeing our work published in the near future! Robert, your tireless work ethic gave life to the project at the start and you were always quick to provide a different perspective. Your 3-day stay in Groningen resulted in some publishable data, a lack of sleep, and a missing pizza delivery guy…I’m sure he’s fine. Also, I had the pleasure to supervise Lailatul Nur
I have held the same spot in my office for 4 years and 9 months and there have been too many faces to count. A month ago I was alone in the office, and now I’m suddenly sur-rounded by four others: Patri, Luca, Floris, and Alex. Luca, I don’t know anyone else quite like you, and I think that’s probably a good thing. Thanks for all the jokes, conversations, and…those other things. I know you’re a really sweet dude, but don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone ;(. Floris, keep up all the smiles. You’re a great distraction in the office, but also try to focus on work from time to time. Alex, you’ve inherited my role as the “Resident Native English Speaker”, so get used to correcting papers and difficult grammar questions (the best response is, “I’m not sure why, it just sounds right”). There have been many students rotating through the office, but no one quite like Natalia. Natka, my Millennial ghost paranymph, from the first “mmhmm” and eyebrow raises I knew we were friends, but we somehow became even better friends when you went back to Poland. If there was a World Championship of Gossip, I have to admit that you would win...but you’d also win the same distinction for Distracting Your Officemates. Your skills in complaining, alcohol tolerance, and breaking-and-entering all confirm the Polish stereotypes. Honestly though, you and melting Asia and your blueberries helped to make the final year of my PhD per-fect…so perfect!!
During my PhD, the Yeast Group has supported me heavily. Our formal weekly meetings and informal discussions in between have been huge. Joury, I’ve known you for almost 5 years now and am constantly impressed by your attention to detail and efficiency in the lab. I’ve also seen you develop from a lab tech to the senior PhD student you are now, and I have no doubt you’ll succeed wherever you end up. Also, a huge thank you for translat-ing the summary of my thesis. Łukasz, I’ve known you almost as long. I enjoyed all of our meetings, but it’s too bad you weren’t better at ping-pong. Maybe it was just the paddle (it’s not a bat). Evi, we’ve also had some great times in Groningen. You and Alex will have to be the ones to Make the Yeast Group Great Again once Joury and Łukasz leave, so learn from them while you can. Jacopo, I’m not really sure why you’re in the Yeast Group, and I don’t think you’re really sure either. But I wanted to mention you anyway since it’s been a lot of fun getting to know you better these last few months.
So many people have influenced my life and work in the Membrane Enzymology group, too many to mention. I know we didn’t have many, but the jam sessions (Bauke, Hendrik,
Gianluca, Valentina) were a highlight in the cold winter and inspired me to spend time
improving at the guitar. Tjeerd, you were instrumental in making my first batch of beer a success. Have you considered a career as Assistant Homebrewer? Pauline, I’ve only known you a short time but we’ve also had some good, difficult, and funny conversations. I’m looking forward to more of them. Space Ruben, what a dude. Thanks for all the fun office talk and distractions! But I’m still not totally sure if you live in Leeuwarden or Deventer. A huge thank you to Margriet for her tireless work and to Ria for keeping the lab running like a well-oiled machine. Gea, thank you also for managing the lab and for all the eggs!
Cristina, thanks for being such a good resource when I was stressed out over organizing
the GRS, and all the best with your group! To all the other Membrane Enzymology people not mentioned here, past and present, I haven’t forgotten about you! Everyone has impact-ed my life and my PhD in some way and for that I’m truly thankful.

My time in the lab was only part of my life in Groningen. Outside the lab I was happy to spend most of my Monday and Wednesday evenings with my Ultimate Frisbee team Gronical Dizziness. I’ve also made some good friends through GD. Erik, my barefoot glu-ten-free National Team comrade, it was great to have you in Groningen for so many years. Your passion for the sport is inspiring, and hopefully we wind up on the same field again soon. Lea and Chrissi, my German girls, you two are super fun and fantastic people. You helped me maintain sanity when I had to spend long days in the library writing my thesis during this beautiful summer. I’m still waiting for our first landshark. Also, Chrissi, you will still never borrow my gloves again.
My former (and current) flatmates have seen me at my best and worst and stuck by me the entire way. I’m so happy to have you both as my friends. Irene, when we lived together, it was so nice to have someone who hated mornings as much as me. I remember so many mornings together of silently hating being awake. I’m constantly impressed and inspired by your focus and resilience in the face of difficult circumstances, and constantly stressed out by your ability to always leave your phone in precarious places. Xuito, you二百五, you’ve had to put up with me more than anyone, and I appreciate that immensely. I know I’m not the easiest person to live with. Despite living together I think you’ve seen me on average once per week (or less) during the past year. I’ll never forget going to China, meet-ing your family there, and travelmeet-ing all over Europe together. I promise that someday we’ll go to Colorado…but what’s the rush?
I’ll go to Eindhoven when I finish here in Groningen. Moving to a new city is always dif-ficult, but I know it will be easier because of the people I’ve gotten to know there already.
Erato, Jamie, you are hilarious and you know it. Looking forward to spending more time
together. I also can’t wait to see the South Gang (Luca, Ilaria, Vincenzo, Maia, Juan
Car-los, Liliana, etc, etc) some more. Laia, Ares, you still count as Eindhoven people even
though you’ve already escaped. Thanks to all of you for the good times so far and for making Eindhoven a welcoming place.
La vida lejos de la patria es difícil, pero tengo una familia española que me ha ayudado du-rante mi doctorado y me ha hecho sentir parte de la familia. It’s difficult to live so far from home, but part of being family is being there for each other no matter the distance. I’m so proud of my little sister Meg. You’ve become a far better Frisbee player than I ever was, and I’m constantly impressed by how hard you work to achieve you goals. I’m glad we could go to China together last year for your (and my) first trip to Asia. Syd, you’re smart and talented, so keep working hard and you’ll do great in college. Suzie, thanks so much for everything over these many years. You’ve been the best step-mom I could have asked for.

Aunt Chrissie and Uncle Fred, thank you both for always being available during my trips
to Maryland and for everything these years. I’m always happy to be at your house, but I’m still a bit worried you’ll burn down the forest one of these days.
Mom and Dad, thank you both for supporting me on my journey across the Atlantic to
pursue my passions. I cannot thank you enough. I know it wasn’t easy to watch me travel eight time zones away to live and work, and I really appreciate that I’ve heard nothing but encouragement from you both.
Finalmente, mi amor, Sonia. Mi burritoita, quería escribite todo esto en español, pero es demasiado difícil transmitir las emociones que quiero transmitir, así que te lo escribo en in-glés. I think it’s ironic how much I like to complain about the Netherlands when it was, in
fact, a stroopwafel that brought us together. I cannot emphasize enough how much of an impact you have had on me as a person, and all in only 4.5 years. We’ve had to spend the last three years living apart, a situation that would test even the strongest of relationships. And there’s been nothing easy about it. This book means many things to me, but I’ve saved your acknowledgement for last because the end of this thesis also signifies the end of these years apart and the beginning of the next stage in our lives. It means we’ve passed the test to be rewarded with our future together. Gracias Sonita, por tu fuerza cuando yo no tenía
