Curriculum vitae

Sha Lou was born on September 7, 1984, in Ningbo, China. She got her bachelor’s degree in 2007 at Beijing Forestry University and got her master’s degree in 2010 at Peking Union Medical College, both in major of life science. Her first job was as a research assistant at Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She was employed for a project of “Gold nanoparticle-based immunochromatographic assay” for one year.In November of 2011, she was enrolled as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Liam A.McDonnell at the Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics, Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands, in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, Leiden University Medical Center (Prof. Dr. Judith V.M.G. Bovée). Her project was funded by COMMIT and the ZonMW Zenith project Imaging Mass Spectrometry-Based Molecular Histology: Differentiation and Characterization of Clinically Challenging Soft Tissue Sarcomas (No. 93512002). The research work resulted in this thesis entitled “Biomarker Discovery in High Grade Sarcomas by Mass Spectrometry Imaging”.

During her PhD time, she received a “Young Investigator” grant for the MSACL conference where she also gave an oral presentation; she won the “Best Poster Prize” at the conference of “Nederlandse Vereniging Voor Massaspectrometrie”.

I always said “I came out from China for an opportunity” and after five years PhD experience working in Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), the Netherlands, it became true. It was an opportunity to meet the excellent people with open minds, creativity and passion with multicultural background, both in science and in life.

First, I must thank the persons who offered me this opportunity as a PhD candidate. André, although you retired during my PhD, you were very much involved from the start: you gave me an inspiring interview and set a first example of a respectful scientist. Liam, you never ceased to amaze me with your millions of ideas and I have learnt a new way of doing science from you – aim high, work hard while keeping a clear and adaptive mind. Judith, thank you so much for taking me on as your official PhD student in a difficult time. I hope I could one day become as successful as you are both in science and in life.

Benjamin, you have helped me so much during my PhD and it’s such a pleasure to work with you.

Bram, Ricardo, Clara, Rene, Ruben, Stephi, Walid and Isabella, we shared a lot of good times in the Mass Spectrometry Imaging group and I thank all of you for being there when I needed you. I also enjoyed the working environment in my department – Center for Proteomics and Metabolomics. My dear (ex)colleagues – Hulda, Simone, Sarantos, Aswin, Rico, Bas, Guinevere, Linda, Rob, Dana, Tugce, Hans – thank you for letting me feel good in a foreign country. Thanks to the constructive leadership from Manfred and flawless care from secretary Manu.

Due to my collaborative project, I spent part of working time in the department of Pathology where I met Inge, Arjen, Marieke and Marie who are excellent researchers in their fields. Thank you for your collaboration.

Jeroen, another excellent scientist in LUMC, thank you for your time on my Dutch summary in this thesis.

I especially send my thanks to a few of my girlfriends (some of them were my colleagues) who gave me so much mental support and encouragement when I was down in life, in work, in a place which is 7500 km away from my original land.

Xuan, Tiziana, Hulda, Dominique, Suzanne and Geertje, thank you!

There is an important family I must acknowledge – Family Wang. We have known each other now for more than four years in the Netherlands. During these years,

you provided support without hesitation whenever needed. Thank you! 雪中送炭 的朋友就算只有一个也比只会锦上添花的朋友们多。谢谢强哥项姐!

Last but not the least, I want to thank my families. Without my parents and my husband, I wouldn’t be here. Mother and father, thank you for giving me life and your unending support. Sorry I couldn’t be around when you needed me the most.

养育之恩无以回报,谢谢爸爸妈妈。我很抱歉不能在你们最需要我的时候在 你们身旁。My husband gave me a new chance to know life – a peaceful, mature and mentally prepared real life. Although a peaceful life can be wavy at times like a deep sea it is nonetheless full of treasures. One of the greatest treasure is our son, Zach. Zach, mamma thank you for bringing me so much joy!

I am lucky not only for getting an opportunity to come here but more importantly, for getting an opportunity to know all these people (forgive me if some I forgot to mention) through whom I saw a better and more exciting world with even more opportunities!
