samenvatting
Matthias, thank you for giving me the opportunity of joining your group and for working with me to achieve this goal. I learned immensely during my PhD and I will make good use of it in my future life.
Prof. B. Jayawardhana. Prof. B.M. Bakker, Prof. J. Zanghellini, I greatly appreci-ate that you took the time to read and assess this thesis and that you were part of my PhD committee.
Andreas, you have saved me on endless occasions from wherever I was stuck. Your valuable input and your technical knowledge propelled me to different lands of unknown math. I would have not been able to do this PhD without you, thank you.
Anna, Alfredo and Daniele, thank you for collaborating with me, I learned a lot from you and really enjoyed the process. A special thanks to Anna and Alfredo for welcoming me in Torino. Grazie mille.
To all the members of the MSB group, thank you for making my PhD journey more interesting and pleasant. Álvaro, you were the best house mate someone could hope for, I loved our long dinner talks and sharing my daily life with you for a year. Silke, thanks for being a great office mate and putting up with my occasional (or frequent) emotional explosions. Thank you Serdar and Vakil for spicing up our lunch talks and for putting the ‘philosophical’ into my PhD. Thank you Simeon for helping me with the computational monster of that model. Thank you so much Georg, for setting me up in my journey before you left the group and for teaching me something about experiments. Little Hanna and Yonathan, you were great fun as teaching partners and special thanks to Hanna for helping me translate my summary. Hannah, I loved hanging out with you and Francisca and going out to enjoy what this lovely city has to offer. Francisca, even though your time in the lab was short, you definitely made my PhD life
