Aknowledgements
In the first place, I want to thank my supervisor Syuzi. Syuzi, thank you for giving me the opportunity to do my PhD in your group. You introduced me to the world of organic chemistry. You are so enthusiastic about chemistry, and always patient in answering my questions. I learned a lot from you, not only about chemistry, but also about guiding students in the laboratory and in class. It has been a very nice experience to work with you. Without your help, I could not have had so many good results.
I also want to thank Wesley for the help with my thesis. You are very generous and always like to help others.
I want to thank Pieter, Johan, Theodora and Monique for the help with NMR, HRMS, HPLC and GC-MS. Annete, I would like to thank you for the secretarial support.
I also wish to express my acknowledgement to the members of assessment committee, Prof. M. A. Fernandez Ibanez, Prof. E. Otten and prof. M. D. Witte. for reading and proving this thesis.
Also I want to thank my colleagues. Jonny, I remember you took me to the lab from the railway station when I came here on my first day. Then you helped me a lot in both life and experiments. It is very nice to have a Chinese colleague to help me become familiar with everything, especially in the beginning when my English was not fluent. Thank you very much for your help. Juanfer, you taught me a lot about the research. I had very little experience with organic synthesis before I came here, and you taught me how to do experiments step by step. Without you, I would not have gotten such a fast start on my research . Mamen, after I came here for one year, I joined your project, and you became my guide. It was a nice experience to collaborate with you and I also learned a lot of things working with you. Ravi, you reminded me a lot about the details of experiments, which was very helpful. Also you are a humorous man, and look very happy every day. I would like to thank my student Ilayda. It was a great experience to guide you; you did a good job. Also I would like to thank Yafei and Luo. I was very happy whenever we went to the Chinese restaurant, played cards, or ate hot pot together. Finally, thanks to all the people in our group: Pablo, Francesco, Tilde, Simone, Juani, Manas, Mercedes, Maria-Jose, Marieke, Kirill, Matthijs (Matthijs ter Harmsel and Matthijs Dijkstra), Cosimo, Roxana, Johanan, Eduarda, Emilio, Natasha, Danijel, Renske, Daan, Paula, Hovhannes and Sofiya.
