Acknowledgments

In remembrance of Prof. Dr. Dr. Widanto Hardjowasito DSB, DSBP,

dear Mas Wid, we started in 1982, when we were on our way from the airport of Halim PK to the airport of Kemayoran both in Jakarta. And during the return from Groningen to Malang, you invited me to share your dedication for such important work i.e. to take part in cleft operations in poor areas in Nusa Tenggara Timur and Timor Timur. You taught me to perform cleft operations, and many other things that deal with humanity. For almost 20 years we worked together, until you called me when I was in Leiden, to come to Malang. I met you a few days before you left us forever. I reported to you “Eindelijk, ik komt naar de resultaat”. In my prayers I wish you “Selamat jalan Mas Wid”.

Prof. Dr. M.A. van ’t Hof, dear Prof Martin, thank you very much for

having supported me in the statistical analysis of the data. Your support and constructive criticism have encouraged me to finish this work. I am really grateful to you.

Dieuwke Veening, dear Dieuwke, thank you very much for the correction of

the English of this manuscript as well as for accompanying Prof Lekkas and so providing an excellent atmosphere during these periods.

Family Lekkas and in remembrance of Vredeleen Lekkas, Lieke, Annetje, Irini, and colleague Josephine thank you for having taken me into

the family. I realise that I have always claimed your papa’s time, even on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mrs. W.D. Blansjaar, Dear Wil, in the beginning it was difficult for you to

read my handwriting. But thanks to God, the computer took over the job. Thank you for your help, especially during the data registration periods, that took such a lot of work and also for your help when I tried to communicate with Prof Lekkas from Indonesia “dat kling kom uit Indonesie“. Thank you very much. I hope to see you one day in Jakarta.

Measurement staff at Kamerlingh Onnes Instituut Leiden, I thank you for

The present study focussed on maxillary and mandibular dental arch width, and on the width and elevation of the palatal shelves in patients with different types of untreated clefts

In comparison with the control group the angle of the palatal shelves in the UCLP subjects at the cleft and non-cleft side was larger which means that the palatal shelves are

At the canine level the mean transversal width was even 7.2 mm (SE 1.9) smaller in comparison with the control group (p=0.0003), while all other transversal dimensions were

Table 3.3 shows the comparison of the transversal arch dimensions between unilateral and bilateral clefts: between UCLA and BCLA and between UCLP and BCLP.. There are hardly

The patients were divided into 4 groups of clefts: unilateral cleft lip and alveolus (UCLA), bilateral cleft lip and alveolus (BCLA), unilateral cleft lip, alveolus and palate
