At the end of my PhD thesis I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who supported me throughout my doctorate and contributed to the success of this work.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Prof. Kathrin Thedieck. You are the one who introduced me to cell signaling and the mTOR field which became my main interest in science. In the many years we have been working together you taught me how to approach scientific questions, introduced me to many scientists in different fields and allowed me to join a variety of conferences and meetings. All of this helped me to become the scientist I am now. I am also deeply grateful for your continuous trust in me and my work that got me through the more challenging times of my PhD thesis. Without your excellent supervision, patient encouragement and our fruitful discussions this thesis would not have been possible. Thank you!

I would also like to thank my co-supervisor Prof. Sushma Nagaraja Grellscheid for her expert support and advice during my PhD thesis.

Next, I want to especially thank the members of my assessment committee Ellen Nollen, Fulvio Reggiori and Jacek Jaworski for reading an assessing my thesis. Furthermore, I would like to thank all current and former members of the Thedieck laboratory, in particular Ineke, Janina, Jorn, Karen, Laura, Lea, Miriam, Marti, Patricia, Paul, Steffi, Tamara, Ulrike and Yang. Thank you for all our scientific and non-scientific discussions. The great times we had in the lab and in “der Witz” will never be forgotten. You guys are amazing!

A special thank you goes to Patricia and Miriam. We have been closely working together the whole time and our scientific exchanges have always been a valuable support for me. In addition, I want to thank you for always being there when I needed someone to talk to. I am more than happy that both of you have agreed to be my paranymphs.

I would also like to thank Antje and Birgit in Freiburg. It is always fun working with you!!

Next, I want to thank all collaboration partners for sharing scientific knowledge, giving advice on new techniques and developing new ideas. In particular, I thank Barbara Bakker and her group, Floris Foijer and his group, Christiane Opitz, Ines Heiland, Sascha Schäuble, Christine Sers, Peter Horvatovich and Marcel Kwiatkowski. I would also like to thank all members of the Department of Pediatrics at the UMCG for invaluable scientific and non-scientific discussions.

A big thank you goes to all my previous students, in particular Annika, Marti, and Yannick. It was so much fun working with you. I am grateful for your support which helped me to finish my thesis. Your friendship means a lot to me and I am looking forward to many more awesome and hilarious hours.

I want to thank my la familia friends Cathrin, Clemens, Julia, Linus, Sabrina and Sarah. Your moral support and after work Pläuschien helped me through some difficult times. I know that I can always count on you and this is NicenStein!!

At last but above all, I want to thank my husband José with all my heart. Words cannot express what you and your support mean to me but one thing is definitely true: I could not have done it without you! Thank you my love for being in my life and making it wonderful!!
