Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook February 7 - 13, 2019

Temperatures:

Below normal temperatures (-1 to -7 degrees C) were observed across northeast Kazakhstan from January 27 to February 2, while temperatures averaged near to above normal across the remainder of the region. The coldest minimum temperature was -41 degrees C in northeast Kazakhstan. The GFS model indicates that minimum temperatures are likely to average more than -15 degrees C below normal across northeast Kazakhstan during the next week. An abnormal cold hazard is posted for this region where minimum temperatures are forecast to fall well below -30 degrees C.

Precipitation

Widespread rain and high-elevation snow (locally heavy) fell across northern Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and eastern areas of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Two of the highest observed amounts (liquid equivalent) included 122 mm in southwest Tajikistan and 81 mm in northeast Afghanistan. The frequent precipitation during January and into the beginning of February resulted in above average snow water equivalent amounts across much of northern Afghanistan.

Heavy rain and high-elevation snow are ongoing across Afghanistan. Since the heavy precipitation is expected to end by February 7, a heavy snow hazard is not posted. The GFS model indicates another low pressure system tracking east and bringing more precipitation to Afghanistan at the end of the outlook period.
