Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook January 31 – February 6, 2019

Temperatures:

Above average temperatures persisted for the second consecutive week throughout much of the region. The GFS model indicates that minimum temperatures are likely to average more than 8 degrees C below normal across northeast Kazakhstan during the next week. An abnormal cold hazard is posted for this region where minimum temperatures are forecast to fall below -30 degrees C. Minimum temperatures are expected to average at or above normal across the remainder of the region.

Precipitation

Rain and high-elevation snow (locally more than 25 mm, liquid equivalent) fell across northern Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The frequent precipitation during January resulted in above average snow water equivalent amounts across much of northern Afghanistan.

A couple of low pressure systems are forecast to track east and result in widespread, heavy snow across parts of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Total snowfall amounts within the depicted hazard area could locally exceed 100 cm.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
