About the author
About the author
Esther Volz was born on May 31st, 1989, in the city
of Mannheim, Germany. She received a diploma in bioengineering in 2015 from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, where she specialized in industrial biotechnology and biomolecular separation engineering. In her diploma thesis, she developed a novel magnetic hydrogel to enable perfusion of human hematopoietic stem cell cultures via contactless motion control. After graduating, she received a European scholarship from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions program and was part of the Innovative Training Network MetaRNA. Since 2018, Esther is an active member of the Marie Curie Alumni Association and was elected chair of the Benelux Chapter the same year. From 2015 till 2019, Esther was a PhD researcher at the DSM Biotechnology Center in Delft and the University of Groningen. She was a visiting scholar at the University of Bonn in 2015 and 2016 and the University of Groningen in 2016. She finalized her PhD research on the development of molecular biological sensors for the detection of fungal secondary metabolites in December 2019. The findings of her research are described in this thesis. Since January 2020, Esther is working as a research project manager for German and European biotechnology- and bioeconomy projects in Frankfurt am Main. In her free time, she keeps herself busy with traveling, several sports activities as hiking, climbing, running, and yoga, and socializing with friends and family members.
