Silvia Cavalli was born in Sant’Angelo lodigiano (near Milano, Italy) on the 17th of June 1975. After completing her secondary education in 1994 in foreign languages and literatures at the linguistic lyceum Maffeo Vegio in Lodi, she started her academic study in chemistry at the Università degli studi di Milano. She graduated from the university in March 2002 (master degree). As part of the study she completed her undergraduate practical research training (November 2000 – May 2001) in the group of Prof. Dr. J. H. van Boom, Leiden Institute of Chemistry (Leiden, The Netherlands) on a Socrates-Erasmus exchange programme. The project dealt with the synthesis of orthogonal protected 2-amino-2-deoxy- glucopyranosides as scaffolds for the construction of combinatorial libraries. In the same year she worked as undergraduate student assistant in the group of Prof. Dr. J.H. van Boom on the synthesis of lumazine-6-carboxylic acid derivatives and (2S,4R)-4-hydroxy-ornithine. In July 2002 she started as a Ph.D. student in the Soft Matter Chemistry group at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry, University of Leiden, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ir. J. G. E. M. Fraaije, Dr. A. Kros and Dr. M. Overhand. During her Ph.D. research project she collaborated with several groups. The mineralization experiments were performed in the group of Dr. N. A. J. M. Sommerdijk (Laboratory of Macromolecular and Organic Chemistry, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands) in collaboration with Dr D. C.
Popescu. In December 2004 she visited the group of Dr. H. Rapaport (Department of Biotechnology Engineering, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel), where she did the AFM measurements with Dr. S. Federman. In February and October 2005 she visited the synchrotron facility (Hasylab, DESY, Hamburg, Germany) performing GIXD measurements in collaboration with Dr. H. Rapaport and Prof. Dr. K. Kjaer (Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark). As of November 2006 she started as a postdoc at The Netherlands Cancer InstituteNKI-AVL (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) in the group of Dr. H. Ovaa (Chemical Biology Laboratory, Division of Cellular Biochemistry).
