ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Finally, after more than four years the adventure PhD comes to an end. It included up and downs, the experience of setbacks and successes, getting lost but also discovering new paths. It would not have been possible to finish this adventure without the encouragement, trust and support of all the people around me. Therefore, I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone who helped me in various different ways to finish my PhD.

First of all, I would like to thank Giovanni who let me join his lab as a PhD student. In comparison to the rest of the group, my project was slightly different, a lot of biology and almost no electrophys. This was sometimes challenging for both of us, but we found a way to work together successfully. I could always rely on you, when I started to struggle you supported me and you were always willing to listen to me and helped me with plenty of scientific as well as life advices. Thank you for giving me the freedom to develop and providing a place for me to grow as a scientist and person. I also would like to thank Misha for guiding me when I just joined the lab. Without you my project would most properly not exist. You were a great inspiration and initiated a lot of projects in the lab, even so you had always also a lot of crazy ideas. I am not sure how often I said after you left ‘that is from Misha’ but it was very often. I am grateful to had you as a mentor, and I learned a lot from you. Also, a big thank you to Natasha for helping me setting up the mammalian cell culture. Our collaborators Ben, Wiktor and Jana for your co-operation and the fruitful discussions. Ben is was an honor to work with you and I enjoyed seeing your interest in biological topics and in particular in our nanopores. Wiktor please keep your enthusiasm for science, it is very inspiring and motivating. You have always been very helpful in finding easy solutions for research and practical problems. Besides that, it surprised me every time how fast you responded to emails or corrected our drafts.

I would like to thank also my reading committee, Prof. Gregor Anderluh, Prof. Oscar Kuipers, and Prof. Arnold Driessen.

A very special thank you goes to my paranymph Nicole. I couldn’t be happier to have you standing beside me and supporting me through my PhD and also my defense. Nicole you were the best company the last four years and it was a lot more fun with you. Your office was my personal coffee corner and a place to talk about everything under the sun. You always had an open ear and a lot of our scientific discussions cleared up my mind and leaded to successful solutions. You are

A very special thank you goes also to Jana. Our collaboration was insane and very successful. You introduced me in the exciting world of photopharmacology and I infected you with the fascination for nanopores. You are such a kind person and helped me every time when I needed something, such as other lamps, consumables or machines. I will miss our chats and regular coffee break meetings and obviously the very cute pictures of your rats.

I also would like to thank all the members of the chemical biology I group.

Nieck, when you started as technician you made Nicoles and my life easier and took over a lot of

tasks. Even so you made me sometimes crazy with you inaccurate time specifications and your accuracy. I am very happy that you will continue the photocontrolled nanopore project, I hope I could show you all the necessary skills.

A special thank you goes to Anmara, for always helping me out with organizational issues and answering every question even the stupid ones.

Shengli, I am impressed of your knowledge about molecular biology and protein expression,

and that you know for almost every problem a solution. Your Christmas presents have a special place in my home.

A special thanks to Roderick for helping me with my Dutch summary and being the sunshine of the lab.

Thanks to all the others of the chemical biology group, past and present for your help and support during the last 4 years: Carsten, Huang, Veerle, Nienke, Florian, Sarah, Lisa, Maaruthy,

Kherim, and Mariam. I am grateful for all the fun we had together when going for lunch and

coffee breaks, having drinks and dinner, going to conferences, and doing fun stuff such as pooling.

In the end, I would like to thank all of those, whose names are not here, but are part of my life and influenced it in various ways.
