CURRICULUM VITAE
______________________________________________________
I was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on the 19th March 1979. I went to school at Colégio Manuel Bernandes, Escola Quinta de Marrocos and finally Escola Secundária de Benfica. School was always interesting, and I loved all the subjects from science to arts.
My diversity of interest at this time is highlighted by the fact that when I was 9 years old I was invited to the National School of Ballet (Escola do Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa). Furthermore, I started to learn Russian in my free time between the ages of 15 and 19, at Instituto Yuri Gagarin (Portugal) and at Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal). While in high school, I also participated on the Portuguese NationalPhysics Olympiad.
In 1997, after finishing high school, I started my undergraduate studies of Chemistry at Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (Portugal). In my last year of Chemistry I was awarded a scholarship of Initiation to Scientific Investigation to work for 5 months at Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (Portugal) on the project “Radiative transference of energy”. I also spent 6 months at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Pascale Ehrenfreund and Dr.
Oliver Botta working on the topic “Astrobiological studies of N-heterocycles under simulated space environment, amino acids in meteorites and synthesis of amphiphilic peptides”. On September 2002 I graduated under the supervision of Prof. Mário Nuno Berberan e Santos on the topic “Static and time-resolved studies of single and multiple light scattering”. Afterwards I worked for 4 months as a graduate researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (Portugal) on the project
“Transport of excitation energy in pentabenzylcyclopentadiene and in a molybdenum complex”.
After being awarded a scholarship by FCT (Portugal), I started my PhD in Leiden in the beginning of 2003 under the supervision of Prof. Pascale Ehrenfreund. During my PhD I participated in conferences in Munster (Germany), Madrid (Spain), Houston (USA), Paris (France), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Tennessee (USA) and Zurich (Switzerland). I have attended a Summer School in Coimbra (Portugal) and a Winter School in Tucson (USA). I had also working visits to ESTEC/ESA (Netherlands), UCSB (USA), Open University (UK), Imperial College London (UK), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (USA) and Carnegie Institution of Washington (USA).
After completing my PhD, I will continue my research at the Imperial College London (UK) in the group of Dr. Mark Sephton.
