Climate Prediction Center’s Central Asia Hazards Outlook October 18 - 24, 2018

Temperatures:

Below-normal temperatures developed across Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan where temperatures averaged 1 to 6 degrees C below normal from October 7 to 13. Subfreezing temperatures were observed across the northern two-thirds of Kazakhstan, northern Uzbekistan, and the higher elevations of the region. Minimum temperatures fell to around 2 degrees C in the lower elevations of western and northern Afghanistan where patchy frost likely occurred. The GFS and ECMWF models indicate below-normal temperatures will persist early in the period before a warming trend begins next week.

Precipitation

Widespread rain and high-elevation snow (2 to 40 mm, liquid equivalent) was observed across southern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and much of Afghanistan during the second week of October. Moderate to heavy snow is ending across the higher elevations of northeast Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Mostly dry weather is forecast to prevail across a majority of the region with light precipitation (less than 25 mm, liquid equivalent) limited to northeast Kazakhstan.

Note: The Hazards outlook map is based on current weather/climate information, short and medium range weather forecasts (up to 1 week), and assesses their potential impact on crop and pasture conditions. Shaded polygons are added in areas where anomalous conditions have been observed. The boundaries of these polygons are only approximate at this continental scale. This product does not reflect long range seasonal climate forecasts or indicate current or projected food security conditions.
