CHALLENGES OF THE JORDANIAN MUSEUMS

THE ROLE OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION

- Museum objects do not have an expiry date; they are expected to last forever.

Therefore, they need to be kept in a suitable environment to preserve them and to slow down the decay process or deterioration that occurs overtime.

- Once an object is exhibited or stored at a museum, it is the museum’s responsibility to prevent any further damage that might occur to this object.

- Notwithstanding their age many archaeological objects are retrieved from their underground situation. Their partial or whole preservation is due to their

‘acclimatisation’ to the surrounding environmental ambience that created a relatively stable condition, unless they were buried under stable and suitable environmental conditions. (This thesis chapter one).

- Light can only damage what it reaches and since the museum objects on display are exposed to light they are at risk of decay and degradation (This thesis chapter four).

- Air pollution is often associated with towns and industry: combustion of domestic heating systems and/or that from the exhausts of intense city traffic (Rosvall 1988).

Therefore, museum side openings must be well sealed to prevent any possible pollution that might penetrate into the museum display rooms or storage.

- The absorption of water (liquid or vapour) makes objects swell and vice versa (Thomson 1986). Consequently, a change in size, shape, and warping is also expected.

- A museum is a multi functional institution; it has the role of displaying, interpreting, and safeguarding the collection in its custody. Therefore, it is vital to provide museums with qualified personnel, necessary equipment and suitable display methods, in order to allow museums to achieve their aims.

- Heritage objects were not purposely made in order to be exhibited in a museum; they have served a specific function in the past. This awareness demands two actions from a museum, preserve its shape and discuss its original use towards the public.

- Archaeological artefacts are a witness of history, and once we have these artefacts, which make some part of history tangible, they should not be squandered.

- While past civilizations’ lifestyles are featured in museums, present civilizations’

attitude is justified by their inheritance. Consequently, museums reflect present civilizations’ identity.

- If the answer is not important for you, it does not matter how you phrase your question.

- Museum routes for blind people will end in nowhere.
