Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I would like to thank my promotor Prof. Sarthak Misra who supported me during all four years of my Ph.D. and after. He has always guided me through my research and helped me to grow both as a researcher and as a person. During my Ph.D. he provided me the possibility and the facilities to experience many new topics, which helped me go further and make my career. I would like to thank my promotor Prof. Matthijs Oudkerk who supported me from the first day of my Ph.D. He always pushed me to look out of the box, see the bigger picture and look at my Ph.D. project as a whole. And last but not least, he always tried hard to make the best facilities and people available for my experiments at UMCG. Thank you both for giving me the opportunity and for trusting me to work under your supervision.

I would like to express my gratitude to Prof. Bart Koopman and Prof. Stefano Stramigioli for creating a great culture and motivating atmosphere at the Department of Biomechanical Engineering (BW) and the Robotics and Mechatronics group (RAM).

Special thanks to Edsko Hekman and Tim van Katwijk who help me to design the robotic system discussed in this thesis. My sincere thank goes to Stella Noach, Jeanine Lodeweges-de Vries and Lianne Bode-Bode for assisting me with all the university regulations, arrangements and paper works.

Furthermore, I would also like to acknowledge Wouter Abbas, Nikolai Melikian, Henny Kuipers, Marcel Schwirtz, Gerben te Riet o/g Scholten, Ronald Dob, Wim Tukker, Klaas van Linschoten and Steve Oosterhoff for their help throughout my work at the University of Twente and UMCG.

Special thanks to my colleagues and co-authors Wout Heerink, Momen Abayazid, Pedro Moreira, Foad Sojoodi Farimani, Roy Roesthuis, Gustaaf Vrooijink, Fouzia Khan, Jakub Sikorski, Federico Ongaro, Nick J. van de Berg, John J. van den Dobbelsteen, Janniko R. Georgiadis, Jason Chevrie, Marie Babel and Alexandre Krupa for the great collaborations and their support.

Conclusions and Future Work

I would like to offer my special thanks to the committee members for agreeing to evaluate my PhD thesis and for their valuable comments and feedbacks. I would like to show my greatest appreciation to my paranymphs Sajjad Rahimi-Ghahroodi and Foad Sojoodi Farimani for being by my side during my defense and for helping me to arrange my Ph.D. ceremony. I am deeply grateful to Saeedeh Rahimi-Ghahroodi for the design of the cover of this thesis.

I would like to thank all my friends in the Netherlands, in Iran and all over the world for supporting me in so many way and in all the intense moments of my life.

Last but not least, I would like to thank my family for their continuous support in my personal and professional life and their patience. I could have never finished this path without their presence and help.
