Rainfall continues to be slightly below average for many areas to begin the Primera season.

During the third week of April, A widely scattered distribution of generally light rains affected the region. The highest weekly accumulations (>100mm) were observed in the southern Caribbean. Parts of southern Guatemala, along with the Colon and Olancho departments of Honduras received more the 25mm of rainfall. Lighter rains were scattered throughout many other regions. Over the past 30 days, analysis of early Primera season moisture anomalies suggests that below-average conditions are holding steady. A few departments of Guatemala do show a reduction or full reversal of negative anomalies during the past week. Remotely sensed vegetation health indices indicate generally satisfactory ground conditions, although recent trends show that degradation is beginning. Increased rainfall in the near future should be able to quickly rejuvenate vegetation and reverse trends.

During the next week, models suggest that enhanced rainfall is likely for parts of central and southern Guatemala, El Salvador and western Honduras. 7-day rainfall is likely to exceed 75mm in local areas. Heavier rains (>100mm) may also occur throughout Costa Rica and Panama.

Meanwhile, light rains should predominate in eastern Honduras and Nicaragua.
