“Pure Innovation”

APPENDIX

Questionnaire explanation

The questionnaire was developed with the Likert uni-dimensional scaling method. I'll explain the basic steps in developing a Likert or "Summative" scale.

• The first step is to define what it is you are trying to measure. Because this is a unidimensional scaling method, it is assumed that the concept you want to measure is one- dimensional in nature.

• The next step is creating a set of potential scale items. These items were rated on a 1-to-6 Disagree- Agree Response scale. I created these items by brainstorming and the help of the NPD process manager.

• Rating the Items. As a next step I had a group of ‘judges’ rate the items. I used a 1-to-6 rating scale where:

1. = Strongly unfavorable to the concept 2. = Unfavorable to the concept

3. = Somewhat unfavorable to the concept 4. = Somewhat favorable to the concept 5. = Favorable to the concept

6. = Strongly favorable to the concept

The questionnaire developed for this study consisted of four main sections: the NPD team, NPD process, NPD planning and the NPD project learning’s.

The first section was intended to determine how employees experience their task and responsibilities and those of their colleges within the NPD process.

The second section, are questions on the NPD process, in particular document handling, communication and approval within the project team.

The third had a focus on project planning and timing within the projects.

“Pure Innovation”

Not to give a neutral choice to the respondents was done to force people to give an answer and not just choose for the easy ‘neutral’ way out.

Survey results

The response rate was 71% (even after reminder emails were sent, which did not actually provide many additional responses). A response of 60% is average for mailed internal questionnaires and the 71 % obtained in this study was felt to be more than reasonable.
