1. Social intelligence is one of the most important skills to establish psycholo-gically healthy work relationships. People at all levels in academia should be trained at the start of their career in basic skills of social intelligence, which include empathy, self-control and adaptability.

2. Young scientists should be encouraged to publish negative results in open access journals as they potentially shape research hypotheses.

3. Being capable of explaining fundamental research outside of the scientific world is as important as expanding the scientific knowledge in the relevant field.

4. As recent developments on electron microscopy allow scientists to reveal fil-ament structures including hydrogen-bond clusters with sub-angstrom res-olution (Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol. 2018, 25, 131-134), its application in soft-matter analysis should have higher priority.

5. Although ‘evolution’ and ‘design’ are often thought to be mutually exclu-sive, for the de-novo synthesis of life, molecules should be designed and analyzed carefully to be able to observe evolution.

6. Increasing the number of women employed in academia cannot be the only method to address gender-equality. The correct number may not be the cor-rect answer.

7. Knowledge and curiosity are mutually reinforcing. Actions lacking one of these aspects, are either useless or superstitious and never bring scientific success.

8. In today’s digital world, PhD students should be forced to print a smaller number of paper copies of their thesis.
