About the author

Astri Ferdiana was born on 26 February 1979 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She is a medical doctor graduated from University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She completed master’s degree in public health at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2004. After working with the World Health Organization for the Java earthquake response in 2007, she became enthusiastic in disability issues. In 2010, she was awarded ThinkSwiss scholarship from the Swiss Government to conduct research in Swiss Paraplegic Research in Switzerland, which fueled her motivation to focus her research in spinal cord injury. She started her PhD in

September 2011 at the Department of Health Sciences, Community and Occupational Medicine at University Medical Center Groningen. She has been awarded national and international research grants for her research in disability, tropical diseases and occupational health issues. Currently she works at the Department of Public Health at Faculty of Medicine University of Mataram in Indonesia. She is also a research fellow at Center for Tropical Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada and a research consultant for several international organizations.
