Lunch breakout room session
Wadden Sea, Green Deal and carbon
Today’s agenda
• Opening and idea behind this initiative
• GHG emissions – what we know and what we want to know
• International participation (programmes, organizations, colleagues etc.)
• Way forward
Goals behind this meeting
The WHY?
• The EU aims to be climate-neutral by 2050 – an economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
This objective is at the heart of the European Green Deal and in line with the EU’s commitment to global climate action under the Paris Agreement.
• Dutch government: 2030: 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
• Sediment dynamics and long term accumulation is relevant for carbon sequestration
• Restoration of wetlands and marshes, changing agriculture land-use provides opportunities for sinks
• Dredged sediment is defined as a ‘’waste’’ in EU legislation
• EU Mission areas: Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters recently published set goals around circularity, habitat restoration, emissions reduction
• Green Deal call gives opportunities to make a next step

GHG emissions – current knowledge (at Deltares)
5
Measure GHG emissions, locally:
• flux chamber measurements
• sediment mesocosms
• pressure based emission
Measure GHG emissions, wide range:
• Satellite (7x7 km grids)
• Eddy covariance
• Under development: drones
Assess total C-cycle & estimate emissions
• BlueCan Tool ()
Assess circularity & emissions
• Circular economy tool STOWA

What do we already do?
Dredging depots (mainly ijsseloog); 2000-2009
• Risk assessment & study of swell from GHG formation
• Study amount of CO2 and CH4 emitted from depot
BlueCan; 2018 - now
• GHG emissions from shallow freshwaters in relation to water quality (nutrients N, P)
• Developed tool for market to estimate emissions in relation to water quality
Kleirijperij; 2019 - now
• Quantify GHG emissions from clay ripening of marine estuary sediment (Eems Dollard)
STOWA circular dredging cycle phase 2; 2020-now
• Assess the dredging cycle of freshwater systems on costs, emission and side aspects
• Provide a tool for market that estimates these factors for different paths in the dredging cycle
• Resulting in a scoring of the different options in light of circularity, to help making informed decisions in freshwater
Carbon emissions/circularity

What can we do in Green Deal?
• Set-up a program with monitoring, experiments and pilot scale demonstrations
• GHG in construction of pilots in the intertidal zone
• GHG in the materials used for the pilots
• GHG storage in the developing pilot once it has been constructed
• GHG in the adaptive management of the pilot
• How can you get involved?
