Alumni newsletter

Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) attaches great importance to its alumni. You are our ambassadors who represent us in many ways, for instance by the role you play in society. We therefore would like to welcome you to be involved, for example as a guest lecturer, by sending us interesting internships and job possibilities and by attending events such as the U.S.E. Academy or the Alumni Event. Read all about this and more in this newsletter.

Career Officer

As of August 2016, U.S.E. has its own Career Officer: Francesca Vink. She will be acting as internship coordinator and alumni coordinator and will be organising events regarding job market orientation for students. Besides, students can come to her for a resume check, LinkedIn profile tips and career advice. Do you want to organise an alumni event for your own cohort and do you need some extra help, are you interested in giving workshops or showing students your workplace, do you have job vacancies for starters at your company that might be interesting for U.S.E.

Save the date: Alumni event “Around the world”

On Thursday evening 18 May 2017 U.S.E. and ECU’92 will organise an Alumni Event. A great opportunity to meet old classmates, have a drink and broaden your network.

The theme of the 2017 event will be ‘Around the world’, inspired by the lustrum theme of ECU’92, celebrating its 25th birthday this year. Curious to know, for example, what it’s like to work in China or London? Or why international alumni have stayed in the Netherlands after graduation? You will find out on the Alumni Event! Afterwards, there will be drinks to unwind and network with your old classmates.

More information about the programme and the subscription will follow later. ECU’92 and U.S.E.

hope to see you on 18May!

Free assessment training!

Are you a recent graduate and are you looking for a job at the moment or in the near future? Then you have probably noticed that an (online) assessment is often part of the recruitment procedure.

The good news is that you can prepare yourself for it! Career Services offers students and recent graduates of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance an exclusive opportunity to follow an assessment training and/or make a mock assessment (online, free of charge). You can also discuss your assessment report afterwards with Katherine Versteegen, Faculty Career Officer. To request an online assessment or register for one of the assessment trainings, please contact Katherine Versteegen (k.versteegen@uu.nl).

Dates: Tuesday 21 February 2017 (more dates will follow)

U.S.E. Master's Thesis Award

For the first time in the history of U.S.E., the best Master's thesis is recognised with the U.S.E.

Master's Thesis Award. The thesis will be chosen for its relevance and its integration of a ‘real- world perspective’ into an economics issue. We are happy to announce that the winner of the award of 2015-2016 is: Arnoud van der Meulen, for his thesis ‘Food: the Drivers of Prices and Demand’. His thesis supervisors were Giulia Piccillo and Utz Weitzel. Arnoud received a certificate and a cash prize during his Master’s Graduation ceremony.

U.S.E. Academy

U.S.E. Academy offers lectures, workshops and symposia of fascinating, inspiring people, like CEOs from large companies or politicians. It gives students the chance to learn more than what is

written in the textbooks and to learn about economics in practice. Alumni are also more than welcome to join these events! The meetings will take place on Thursdays from 17.00 – 18.30 in the Spinoza Hall.

Coming up:

 16 March – Bas van Abel, CEO of Fairphone

 11 May – Prof. Dr. Paul Hilbers, Divisional Director of the Dutch Central Bank

The Day of…

In September 2014, U.S.E. started a new tradition to begin the academic year by reflecting upon issues that play an important role in the world. This year’s theme was: “Experiments in

Multidisciplinary Economics”. The day had a large and very participative audience that included MSc students, staff members of U.S.E and a couple of honours BSc students. The presented experiments covered varying topics in the fields of sociology and policy - from gender differences in competition to the influence of “self-talk” in the ultimatum game - which shows the many real world applications these experiments can have. Curious to find out more about this day? Check out this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpyyv-Z_z8c

Do you have internship positions to offer?

As you may have experienced yourself, an internship is a great opportunity to prepare yourself for the labour market. U.S.E. seeks to help students in finding these opportunities. So if you are offering an internship position, please let us know by sending an e-mail to Francesca Vink via internship.use@uu.nl.
