Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor prof. dr. K.U. (Katja) Loos for the kind support of my PhD research, for her patience, motivation, and immense knowledge. Her guidance helped me in all the time of research and writing of this thesis. I could not have imagined having a better advisor and mentor for my PhD study. Her unique approach to research and the freedom provided to me to choose my own research path were incredible. Even at the end of my PhD she did not spare any effort to help me finding a suitable career, something that not every advisor does.

Besides my advisor I would like to thank my second promotor Prof. E. van Ruymbeke whose guidance and instructions indeed deepened my knowledge in rheology and gave me the passion to spend a significant time on this exciting field of research. Without Evelyne, the content and the scope of this thesis could have been very different.

I am also grateful to the assessment committee: prof. dr. M.M.G. (Marleen) Kamperman, prof. dr. F. (Francesco) Picchioni, and prof. dr. W. H. (Wolfgang) Binder, for their insightful comments and encouragement, and the time spent on my thesis. I am in particular thankful to Wolfgang as his brilliant instructions in polymer chemistry during my master thesis formed my knowledge at the start of my PhD research. I am blessed to have had him for my master thesis as without his scientific and non-scientific support, I would not be where I am now in my life.

Although officially not my supervisor, Dr. G. (Giuseppe) Portale, spent a significant time for my research and for that I would like to thank him. Giuseppe, to me you were more like a senior friend than a colleague and I want you to know that our discussion on SAXS were the most productive moments of my research! Thanks for your support.

Prof. dr. S.S. (Shirin) Faraji, I had the honor to collaborate with you and I want you to know that you were always inspiring to me. Similarly, I would like to thank L.E. Aguilar Suarez, whose contribution to my research was crucial.

A. Barati whose open-mindedness and instructions were a turning point in my career. I find myself lucky to have had the chance to perform research in three different countries. When I went to Halle (Saale) in Germany to do my masters study, I barely knew how the real research works. In Halle I had the privilege to be supervised by Dr. D. Döhler and Dr. S. Rana. Diana and Sravendra, thank you both for your inspiring support, I wish I could have spent more time to learn more from the both of you. I definitely do not forgot the rest of my colleagues in the research group in Halle University. But also I am grateful to be a classmate with Younghun Shin and Varun Danke who changed my life and I consider them the best friends I have ever had.

Anyways, life had to go on and I had to come to the beautiful city of Groningen. I was lucky to meet great scientists in my research team in Macromolecular Chemistry and New Polymeric Material Group. Being not only my officemate, but also a great friend, Dr. Csaba Fodor was someone who I relieved my stressful days in the beginning of my PhD. I was unfortunate that he left the group before my PhD ended, but his contributions to my PhD is indisputable. Csaba “geh nach Hause!”:D. Dr. D. Maniar, you are an amazing scientist but more than that an amazing person. You never refused to help me when I asked you and I am really grateful for that. I hope you keep some of the photos you took during my PhD, a secret :P. Albert Woortman and Jur van Dijken, thank you both for your great support. Your input in my thesis is unquestionable. C.J. (Karin) Woudstra, I am thankful to your support especially at the beginning of my PhD when I almost had no residence permit but your constant help made me through my entire PhD. Aldo Altomare, Alloraaaaa! I wish you all the best for your PhD, you are an amazing PhD student and I see great future ahead of you. I am happy to be your officemate although Alessia Falchi´s presence contributed the mood of the office, too. Annemarie Maaaaaaaaan, I have seen little people as spirited as you. I consider you more of a friend than a colleague. Your support on my frustrating PhD days helped me throughout my PhD. I am sure, you will have a brilliant future and keep in mind if one day you had any problems in your research or personal life, I am there for you.

In my PhD I had the honor to be in the same team as Anton Hofman, Niels Meereboer, Azis Adharis, Ivan Terzic, Peter Dijkstra, Maho Nakajima, Pia

Schöbel, Masyitha Ambarwati, Qi Chen, Renato Lemos Cosse, Fitrilia Silvianti, Yassaroh, Chongnan Ye, Harm-Christian Beens, Vincent de Gauw, Tonghua Liu, Razieh Mehrabi and I am extremely grateful for that. Larissa van Westerveld and Mohammad Khoonkari, although I did not have the chance to work with you, I always appreciated your presence in my PhD, especially during my presentations in conferences. My gratitude also goes to the group of Giuseppe, namely, Dr. Apostolos Vagias, Dong JingJin, Marco Viviani, Federico di Sacco. Apostolos I will never forgot our discussions on polymer dynamics and short time we spent on going jogging.

During my PhD, however there were people whose feedback contributed to my research although were not in my team. One of them is Dr. Corina Prent, who I owe a lot and I always enjoyed talking to. Prof. M. Rubinstein, Prof. Dr. Q. Chen and Dr. S. Costanzo, all were truly supportive and I enjoyed our fruitful discussions.

My students Laura Boetje, who was an extraordinary student, Pascal Mulder and Gerda, thank you all for your feedback during my PhD and I hope I could teach you something useful and forgive me if not!

During my residence in Groningen I got to meet great friends and their contribution to my life was something I cannot replace. Alessandra Hausmann, meeting you was indeed a turning point in my life, I cannot describe our friendship with words. All I can say is that I am proud of you and grateful to you for all the moments we shared. I have never seen such an open-minded person and I have to admit you helped me find myself and are more than a friend to me. I see a bright future for you, keep on the good work! Charlotte Klimek, our friendship was established in a totally random occasion but with all our differences, I always felt there is a lot common between us. I enjoyed a lot our time together and especially our political discussions. I want you to know meeting you is one of the highlights of my life in Groningen.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank my family: my parents, my brother and sisters for supporting me my entire life. Dad, I never forget the moment you and mom came to my room and saw me sad and told me you would always be there for me and do whatever needed to make me happy and you did! I reached my dreams and it was because of you. Mahdi, you were the closest person to me and always inspired me. Although only five minutes older, I felt I learned a lot from you. Marveh and
