From June 21−30, 2011, the movement of the ITF was characterized by a substantial northward advancement across the central portions of West Africa due to the occurrence of strong thermal low in the Sahel, which strengthened the moist southerly winds across the Gulf of Guinea. However, the dry northerlies over northern and central Sudan continued to block the migration of the ITF, resulting in inflection across its eastern portion during the third dekad of June. The mean western portion of the ITF was located approximately at 17.3 degrees North and led the mean climatological position by half a degree, while its mean eastern portion approximated 14.5 degrees North and was ahead of the climatology mean by only 0.1 degrees. Figure 1 shows the current ITF position relative to the climatology position for the third dekad of June and its previous position during the second dekad of June. Figures 2 and 3 are time series, showing the latitudinal means of the western and eastern portions of the ITF, respectively, and their evolutions since the start of April.
