From September 1−10, 2011, the ITF had begun its seasonal retreat to the South across Africa. The ITF also experienced a rapid southward movement relative to its position during the third dekad of August.

The ITF is now closest to the mean climatological position during this time of the year. The mean western portion of the ITF was approximated at 18.2 degrees North and lagged slightly behind the mean position by 0.3 degree. The ITF’s mean eastern portion was located near 15.8 degrees North and trailed the average position by only 0.3 degrees. Figure 1 shows the current ITF position relative to the climatological mean position for the first dekad of September and its previous position during the third dekad of August. Figures 2 and 3 are time series, illustrating the latitudinal means of the western and eastern portion of the ITF, respectively, and their evolutions since the start of April.
