Central America Weather Hazards and Benefits Assessment

For

October 25 – October 31, 2007

1) During the second dekad of October heavy rains in

Huehuetenango and San Marcos in Guatemala caused landslides, flooding, and strong ocean surges along the southern Pacific coast.

Those conditions persisted during the last observation period due to the continuance of rains in the region. In Huehuetenango roads that lead to aide accessibility in Chiapas, Mexico are now impassible.

2) In eastern El Salvador heavy rains have led to saturated soil conditions and now have the potential to further impact crops that were partially damaged by heavy rains during the second dekad of October. In the coming observation period there is potential for localized flooding.

3) In Honduras, rains have led to flooding, impassible roads, mudslides and there is a concern of crop damage.

Soil conditions in Lempira and Copan are thoroughly saturated making it difficult for crops and for the receipt of aide. Rains is the coming period will continue to worsen conditions.

Accumulation totals dropped across the region this period. Last week the Gulf of Fonseca area experienced torrential rains leading to flooding, landslides, lost infrastructure, crops, and death. Guatemala and Costa Rica experienced similar conditions, forecasts indicate a persistance of conditions as heavy rains are expected again in this period. Early next period there will be localized storms with the potential for flooding in much of Huehuetenango and Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, in the coastal areas of the departments Atalantida, Esparanza, Colon, and Sierra, Gracias a Diosof Honduras. Later in the period eastern and southeastern El Salvador may experience localized flooding and damaged crops due to some rainfall accumulation. North central Nicaragua in the department of Monte Grande centered near Boaco will experience storms with the potential for localized flooding also. Thoroughly saturated soils in the Gulf of Fonseca region are now a concern because more rains will only worsen crop conditions.
