Acknowledgements

Everytime, writing the acknowledgments is always the most complicated thing.

I would like to gratefully acknowledge those who have contributed to this thesis and supported me during my PhD study.

First and foremost, I would like to thank my promoters, Prof. Alberto Signore and Rudi Dierckxs that gave me the opportunity to conduct this PhD project.

In particular, my deepest gratitude goes to to my first supervisor and supporter, Prof. Alberto Signore, who did teach me everything and more than he could think … hard work, punctiliousness, precision, attention to details that led me to a personal and professional growth, thank for the continuing support, suggestions and stimulus to work and confrontation.

A special thanks goes to Filippo and Michela, two fantastic colleagues and companions of travel, adventures, experiments ... thanks for the continuous support, both emotional and professional. I could tell so many anecdotes that have happened during these years, but what happens in the lab remains in the lab.

Thanks to Gerda for the understanding and help provided me whenever I needed it.
