2022 China Scholarship Council – Utrecht University Appendix Faculty of Geosciences

The UU PhD information form on the University website provides information on procedures and regulations regarding CSC applications. Sometimes the exact procedure is specific to a faculty.

This document provides information on faculty-specific interpretations of the general UU-rules. It also provides pointers on who is responsible for which actions. This appendix supplements the UU PhD information form.

The information is intended for CSC applicants and for their prospective supervisors.

5 Contact Utrecht University to find a UU professor who is willing to be your supervisor to obtain your PhD degree in Utrecht

At the faculty of Geosciences, the applicant contacts a prospective supervisor him/herself by sending the application form at the end of the UU PhD information form to the prospective supervisor.

Based on the information you provide in your application form the prospective supervisor will contact you and inform you whether or not he/she is interested in your application.

Before doing so, the prospective supervisor checks the

requirements 1 (possible candidate), 2 (degree), and 3 (level of English language), according to the rules in the UU-document.

The prospective supervisor is advised to also hold a Skype interview with the applicant, in which they, for example, discuss relevant journal papers.

6 The prospective UU supervisor approves your application

If the prospective UU supervisor approves of the application, the applicant must send him or her the documents as stated in the UU information form.

These papers will be assessed within the department, but the department / prospective supervisor is advised to submit this to the UU Admission Office.

The prospective UU supervisor should arrange approval of his or her research director, as described in the GSG quality

Assurance Plan for PhD research, training and supervision (section 3.1.1).

The standard letter of acceptance (to be found at

https://www.uu.nl/en/research/asia) must be signed by the prospective UU supervisor and co-signed by the UU research director of the department.

9 Letter of acceptance

The UU prospective supervisor will send the letter of acceptance to the applicant with copy the UU Academic Affairs Office, c/o Mr. Jeroen Frietman at j.b.frietman@uu.nl and to the Graduate School of Geosciences at graduateschool.geo@uu.nl to inform them that a CSC PhD scholarship will be applied for.
