Jan Christiaan Nierstrasz was born in Amsterdam on the 27th of June in 1978. After his secondary education in Zoetermeer, he decided to study History. He finished two BA’s (History, 1999 and French language and culture, 2002)and received two MA’s (History, 2001 and French language culture, 2003) at Leiden University. His MA-thesis in History won him the Prix de Paris, which allowed him to study in Paris for a year. During his stay at the university of Paris IV he successfully pursued a DEA (2003, mention très bien) in History under the tutelage of professor J-P. Poussou and professor P. Haudrère. After his return in Holland, he joined the TANAP-project at the University of Leiden as an AIO under the supervision of professor J.L. Blussé and professor F.S. Gaastra. This project provided him with the opportunity to work in archives from Holland to Jakarta with excursions to India and Sri Lanka. This archival research, together with the work done in the private archives of VOC-servant Lubbert Jan van Eck provided the building blocks for this thesis.
