With this opportunity I would like to express my gratitude to the individuals who never deprived me of their support throughout my PhD. First of all, I would like to thank my promoter Prof. Rainer Bischoff to give me the opportunity to be part of the Analytical Biochemistry group. I am grateful for your inspiring guidance, invaluable constructive criticism and friendly advice throughout my PhD. I would also like to express my special thanks to my supervisor Dr. Hjalmar Permentier for his continuous support and guidance during my practical work in the laboratory. Many thanks Hjalmar for your valuable contributions on my manuscripts, Dutch translation of my thesis and helping me to solve all the technical problems. I definitely learnt a lot from you.

I am deeply grateful to the assessment committee members; Prof. Gerrit Poelarends, Prof. Frank Dekker and Prof. Herbert Oberacher to spend their valuable time to read my thesis. I would also like to thank Prof. Marco Fraaije and Marzena Krzek for their fruitful collaborations which resulted in a very nice publication. I am very happy to work with colleagues in our STW project and especially I thank Jean-Pierre, Nico and Agnieszka for their kind contributions for my research. I also thank Prof. Peter Horwatowich for his fruitful discussions about Design of Experiments. I must say that Peter apart from the work I enjoyed a lot by playing football with you.

The contribution of my colleagues in Analytical Biochemistry group and Mass Spectrometry Facility could not have been underestimated. Throughout my PhD you all made me feel like a family. I would like to start with my project mates Tao (Larry) Zhang and Tao Yuan (The TTT Team-). Guys I think we did really great job. It was all fun to work with you and share our knowledge and experience to each other. Andries, I am really glad to learn very first basics of Mass Spectrometry from you. I wish I could have learnt more from your knowledge and experience in Mass Spectrometry. I would like to thank our MS-technicians Marcel, Annie and Margot for their endless supports to solve the technical problems in the laboratory. Marcel indeed you were my hero and I learnt a lot from you, thanks for all of your helps. Karin I had quite fun to share the working office with you, thanks for your friendship. I am very glad to have the opportunity to work with Alex, Sara and David. Thanks a lot guys, definitely you were not only colleagues for me but also very good friends. I cannot forget our drinking and game nights. Nico I enjoyed a lot with our talks during the lunch breaks and of course learnt a lot from the Quantitaive Bioanalysis course. I also like to thank our secretary Jolanda for continuous helps with various paper works. I would like to thank also my other colleagues Daniel, Peter Bults, Kees, Natalia, Jos, Jan Willem, Wen Xuan, Jiaying, Georgia, Marcel Kwiatkowski, Daan, Jetse, Vikram, Victor,
