It seems only like yesterday when I arrived to Amsterdam back in February 2009 to start a new chapter in my life. Looking back in time, going abroad was the best decision I could have made. It’s been amazing four years and a truly life-changing experience. Therefore, there is a long list of people I would like to express my gratitude to.
Jan, I am grateful for your support throughout these past four years. Although it might have been difficult in the beginning, I believe we found ways to work together and make the most out of it. Thank you for putting your trust in me and giving me the space and independence that I truly needed. It worked out in the best possible way. I could not ask for a better supervisor.
Koen, Anja and Sander – thank you for your help and support in the past four years. Your broad knowledge and experience were truly priceless. Thank you for all stimulating discussions during our departmental meetings.
Eszter and Simon, I wouldn’t be where I am now, if it wasn’t for both of you. Eszter, you were a great support, both on scientific level as well as privately. Your unstoppable, never-ending passion for research made a difference in lives of many PhD students that had a pleasure to work with you. I’m grateful I was one of them; it’s hard to express my gratitude for you in few short sentences. You were there from the very beginning, you taught me how to find my way around in the lab, how to fight for my rights and opinions. I missed you a lot once you were gone. Ruben and Magda, my dear paranymphs. Ruben, when I met you for the first time back in Kyoto, I thought you were the single most annoying person I have ever met. And you proved it right later on…, but you’re also one of the most intelligent and trustworthy people I met, and probably such combination drove us closer together. Thank you for your support and help, for being a friend, for sharing countless borrels, finally – for being a great paranymph. Do M. – chociaż nasze drogi rozeszły się w dość dramatycznych okolicznościach, te niemal osiem lat spędzone razem nie przeszły bez echa. Dziękuję Ci za wszystkie pozytywne chwile, a było ich niemało; te mniej radosne wymazałam już z pamięci. Mam nadzieję, że znajdziesz (znalazłeś?) to czego szukasz.

Ciepłe słowa kieruję do całej swojej rodziny, bliższej i dalszej, do Heleny, Józka, Andrzeja, Agaty, Czarka, Bartka, do dziadków, a także do bliższych i dalszych kuzynów.
Mamo, Tato, bez Was nie zaszłabym tak daleko. Byliście ze mną wtedy, kiedy najbardziej Was potrzebowałam. Zawsze gotowi na to, żeby przejechać pół Europy, aby tylko się upewnić, że ze mną wszystko w porządku. I to pomimo tego, że nie zawsze potrafię (a właściwie prawie nigdy tego nie robię) okazać swoją wdzieczność za to co dla mnie robicie, pamiętajcię ze bardzo Was kocham (!) i to się nigdy nie zmieni.
Siostrzyczko, trudno jest zamknąć w paru zdaniach wszystko za co powinnam Ci podziękować. Chyba przede wszystkim za cierpliwość, szczególnie ważną dlatego, że żadna z nas z niej nie słynie; za uświadamianie mnie że czasami zachowuję się jak rasowa, irracjonalna idiotka. Parę słów krytyki z Twojej strony zawsze skutecznie sprowadzało mnie na ziemię. Dzięki Tobie stałam się osobą, jaką jestem teraz. Stałam się kimś, z kogo (mam nadzieję) zarówno Ty jak i Rodzice możecie być dumni. Bardzo Cię kocham.
