biography
Arianne Hélène Teeuw (Rian) was born in Dordrecht in 1960. After graduating from secondary school, Develstein College in Zwijndrecht, she started to study medicine at the Vrije Universiteit (Free University) in Amsterdam in 1979. She gained her medical degree (summa cum laude) in 1987. From 1987 to 1988 she performed a research internship at the Central Laboratory blood transfusions, department Immunohematology, in Amsterdam. From 1988-1989 she worked as a resident in paediatrics in the Academic Hospital in Groningen where Prof. dr. H.S.A. Heymans was her tutor. From 1989 till 1993 she was a resident in training in the Emma Children’s Hospital- Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, where Prof. dr. C.J. de Groot was her tutor, with a peripheral internship in Medisch Centrum Alkmaar, tutor dr. P.P.M. Schilte.
From 1993 to 2003 she worked as a general paediatrician and head/ supervisor of inpatient departments of the Emma Children’s Hospital- AMC.
Since 2004 she is head of the interagency interdisciplinary Child Abuse and Neglect Team of the AMC, TASK Amsterdam.
Since 2008 she is instructor/ course director of the WOKK course (education in child maltreatment for paediatricians) at the SSHK (Dutch Foundation for the Emergency Medical Care for Children).
Since 2009 Rian is a subspecialist in Social Pediatrics, and in 2010 she became a tutor next to Dr. H.H. F. Derkx, pediatrician in Social Paediatrics, in the Emma Children’s Hospital for the subspecialty Social Pediatrics.
From 2012-2014 she was one of the two national coordinators and a developer of the NODO procedure (Child Death Review) and one of the developers of the NODO education, SSHK, mandated by the Ministry of Justice. Hence, in 2015-2016 she was one of the developers of the new procedure, called NODOK, and the NODOK education, mandated by the Ministry of Health and Sports.
In 2010 she organized the outpatient clinic for over 150 possible victims of the so called Amsterdam Child Sexual Abuse Case in day-care centers.
Rian was one of the editors of the first Dutch Medical Textbook Child Abuse (Medisch Handboek Kindermishandeling, 2013).
Since 2015, Rian is one of the pediatricians in the LECK (Landelijk Expertise Centrum Kindermishandeling, Dutch National Expertise Centre in Child Abuse) and since 2016 Rian is one of the paediatricians in the Centre for Sexual Violence (Centrum voor Seksueel

Geweld) Amsterdam-Amstelland. Rian was project leader of the NVK (Dutch Pediatric Association) Guideline “Diagnostiek bij een vermoeden van seksueel misbruik bij kinderen” (Assessment in case of suspicion of child sexual abuse); a guideline constructed with a multidisciplinary interagency working group in 2016.
Rian organised national and international conferences, for example the three international conferences EUCCAN (EUropean Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect) in 2012, 2014 and 2016.
Rian supervises many students in research internships in Social Paediatrics and is responsible for the daily supervision of three PhD students in Child Abuse & Neglect (Eva Hoytema-van Konijnenburg, Thekla Bosschaart en Kirsten van Ham).
Rian is married with Albert Blom, together they have three wonderful children: Iris, Felix and Jasmijn.
