Bastiaan Havekes werd geboren op 17 augustus 1976 te Utrecht. Na het behalen van zijn VWO diploma (cum laude) aan het Christelijk Lyceum in Alphen aan den Rijn, begon hij in 1994 met de studie geneeskunde aan de Universiteit Leiden. Vanaf 1996 tot 1998 was hij als student-assistent betrokken bij de afdeling Endocrinologie en Metabolisme van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum onder supervisie van Prof. dr. J.W.A. Smit, hetgeen uiteindelijk leidde tot publicatie van zijn scriptie over folliculaire schildkliercarcinomen. In 1999 behaalde hij zijn doctoraal examen geneeskunde (cum laude) en in december 2000 werd het artsexamen behaald (cum laude).
Vanaf 2001 tot 2007 was hij werkzaam als arts-assistent in opleiding tot internist in het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum te Leiden (opleider Prof. dr. A.E.
Meinders en Prof. dr. J.A. Romijn) en het Leyenburg Ziekenhuis te Den Haag (opleider Dr. R.H. Kauffmann). In 2006 werd aangevangen met de opleiding tot internist- endocrinoloog in combinatie met het wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar paragangliomen, leidende tot dit proefschrift, bij Prof. dr. J.A. Romijn, Prof. dr. J.W.A.
Smit en Dr. E.P.M. van der Kleij-Corssmit.
Na zijn registratie als internist-endocrinoloog in 2007 heeft hij zijn onderzoek naar paragangliomen voortgezet aan de National Institutes of Health in de Verenigde Staten bij de groep van Prof. dr. K. Pacak.
Vanaf 2009 zal hij als internist-endocrinoloog werkzaam zijn in het Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht.
