Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook December 12 – December 18, 2013

Seasonally light rainfall continues during December.

Light shower activity was observed across Hispaniola during the last seven days. The highest rainfall accumulations (5-20mm) were again observed across the Gulf of Gonaives region for the second consecutive week, bringing some moisture into the coastal parts of the Artibonite, Ouest and Nippes departments of Haiti. In the Dominican Republic, light amounts of rainfall were received near the capital region, as well as, along the northern coastline of the country. Since August, seasonal precipitation has been largely suppressed, and has led to the development of substantial ground moisture deficits throughout northwestern and southwestern Dominican Republic. With winter precipitation being climatologically drier compared to summer and fall months, a significant increase in moisture to help alleviate ground conditions is not likely across parts in northwestern/southwestern Dominican Republic. Remotely sensed vegetation indices continue to show poor ground conditions across these areas. For the upcoming outlook period, an enhancement of rainfall is expected in the Caribbean; however some of the heavier rainfall accumulations are expected to remain offshore from the Dominican Republic.
