The focus for heavier rainfall will be central areas of Guatemala and Honduras and around the southern Caribbean next week.

Light rains continued to be even more widespread throughout Central America this past week. Total rainfall of 5-25mm was observed over many scattered areas of the Central American countries according to satellite estimates. Some slightly larger amounts (more than 25mm) were observed in parts of western Guatemala and scattered parts of northern Honduras. Totals as much as 100mm or more were observed in a region from southern Nicaragua, through Costa Rica, and into Panama. Some localized flooding reports came from San Marcos and Huehuetenango departments of Guatemala. Rainfall amounts were near or slightly above average for early April. Some larger positive rainfall anomalies of 25- 100mm were registered in southern Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Rainfall performance over the past 30 days shows a favorable distribution with most areas registering positive anomalies for the period. Some of the largest, greater than 50mm, are found in Nicaragua, eastern Costa Rica, Panama, and parts of northern Honduras. Vegetation health is generally moderate to good in the region according to NDVI analysis. Due to favorable soil moisture conditions, earlier than normal planting activities will soon be taking place In Guatemala. Some negative NDVI anomaly is still visible in northern Guatemala, northern Honduras as well as western Panama where rainfall has been uneven over the past few months.

During the second week of April, moderate rains are forecast across central Honduras and the mountainous regions of Guatemala. Rainfall totals of 25-50mm are expected there. Heavier rains, possibly exceeding 50mm, are likely in Costa Rica and Panama. The Pacaya Volcano is erupting in south-central Guatemala near the capital city. Advancing lava flows will continue to impact crops and property. Ash is also likely to negatively affect crops and water supplies.
