Over de auteur

Lieke van Balen werd geboren op 28 april 1982 te Groningen. Na het behalen van haar VWO-diploma in het jaar 2000 aan het Praedinius Gymnasium te Groningen, heeft zij twee studies aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen voltooid. Dit begon met een propedeuse Informatica, die toegang gaf tot de bovenbouwopleiding Kunstmatige Intelligentie. Het Masterdiploma in de Kunstmatige Intelligentie behaalde zij in 2005, cum laude. Vervolgens deed zij het schakeljaar van de zij-instroom geneeskunde, om daarna de Master geneeskunde eveneens cum laude af te ronden, in 2010. Tijdens haar studie geneeskunde deed zij een onderzoeksproject bij het Instituut voor Ontwikkelingsneurologie, dat zij na haar co-schappen voortzette als promotieonderzoek in het kader van een MD-PhD traject. Haar promotieonderzoek richtte zich op de ontwikkeling van houdingsregulatie bij gezonde kinderen en kinderen met een hoog risico op motorische ontwikkelingsstoornissen. De resultaten van dit onderzoek staan beschreven in dit proefschrift. Sinds december 2012 is zij werkzaam als arts-assistent in opleiding tot arts-microbioloog, eerst bij het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen en sinds september 2016 bij het Maastricht Universitair Medisch Centrum.
