Annexure 2 In-depth Interview Guide

(Modified after Pretesting)

Note: Instructions for the interviewer and probes are given in Italic

(Interviewer will ask the following information from the respondents and will write down the same in the blanks)

(Use codes: F=female, M=Male, U= Urban, R= Rural, A=Age (15-19), B=Age (20-24), For instance, write MRB-4 for the forth male interviewed in the rural area age (20-24)

General Information

Please ask the questions in Urdu and record the responses in Urdu or English or both

1. What is your Age? (Take help from NIC* or if NIC not available calculate from the last birthday)

*National Identity Card

2. What is your education?(None, Primary, Middle, Matriculation., FA,FA+)

3. What is the education of your spouse?(None, Primary, Middle, Matriculation., FA,FA+)

4. What was your age at marriage? (If the respondent cannot tell exact age at marriage ask some specific event that might have taken place in the year of marriage)

5. What was the age of your spouse at marriage?

6. Since how long are you living here? (Ask in years. if the respondent is living there less than 2 years, ask about the previous residence)

7. Please describe in detail the education facilities (school, college, etc) in your area? (Probe: Are you satisfied? if not please explain)

8. Please tell me in detail about health facilities (Hospital, dispensary, doctors, nurses, medicines, etc) in your area? (Probe: Are you satisfied? if not please explain)

Section II a)Contraceptive Use

(Interviewer: In this questionnaire, the terms Sexual Issues refers to Jinsi Mammlaat ,the term Reproductive issues refers to the issues of contraceptives , their use and spacing etc)and contraceptives refers to modern methods like condom, IUD, female sterilization, oral pills, injection only)

11. Do you wish to have more babies? (If yes, When)?

12. What should the couples do if they want to have space between the babies?

14. Have you ever heard of contraceptive methods (Mansooba Bandi kay Tareeqay)? (Interviewer: Ask condom, IUD, female sterilization, oral pills, injection only. The purpose of this question is only to know that they have heard it or not?)

Which method do /will you use and why do you prefer this method upon others? (Try to find out why he or she uses or does not use the contraceptives. Skip this question if the respondent does not use any method)

15. How did you know about these methods? (Skip this question if the respondent does not know about the methods)

16. Who knows more about contraceptive methods and their use? Men or women? (Probe: Why are they more knowledgeable?)

19. Is there any special verse in Quran, which says something about avoiding pregnancy? (Probe: Can you describe?)

21. What are the hurdles (if any), which young girls and boys face while talking freely and frankly with their parents and elders in the family?

22. Who in your opinion is shyer (reluctant) about talking sexual issues and reproductive issues ? Men or women? (Probe; why are they shyer?)

23. To whom do you mostly share your sexual and reproductive problems)? And why?(Ask separately about sexual and reproductive problems)

24. Who do you think give you the authentic information about your sexual (Makhsoos Musaayal) and reproductive health (relating to babies and contraceptives)? (Probe: why do you consider them authentic source)

25. What are the hurdles in talking about sexual and reproductive health issues within family members? (Ask about the family members one by one)

26. How frankly and comfortably do you and your wife talk on sexual /reproductive issues with each other? (Probe: If not why?)

27. What are the advantages of talking about family planning issues with your peers/friends?

28. What are the hurdles of talking about sexual issues ( Jinsi makhsoos Musaayal) and reproductive issues(contraceptives, spacing etc)with your peers/friends?
