Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET

July 7 – July 13, 2011

Light to moderate rains were observed in Haiti during the past week.

Light to moderate (10-40mm) rains were observed across much of Haiti during the past seven days. Moderate (30-50mm) rains fell over the southern peninsula and northern departments of Haiti, while light to no rainfall (< 10mm) fell elsewhere. This is in stark reduction of rainfall relative to the weekly totals that were observed during the previous week. As a result, thirty-day rainfall surpluses that were accumulated from a wetter than average past month have been neutralized in the northern half of Haiti during the past seven days. Rainfall forecast during the next week suggests localized heavy (> 50mm) rains in the central and southern portions of Haiti. The remainder of the country is, however, expected to receive light to moderate (10-30mm) rainfall. Although the reduction of rainfall should bring relief for previously-saturated areas, it could lead to moisture deficits and negatively affect cropping conditions in some areas.
