About the author
Marco van Londen was born on July 17th 1991 in Lienden. In 2009 he received is VWO diploma at the Christelijk Lyceum Veenendaal. He started Medicine at the University of Groningen in the same year. Almost from the start of his education his interest in internal medicine and scientific research was sparked. Under supervision of prof. dr. G. Navis and dr. M.H. de Borst he started in 2011 with a research project at the department of internal medicine, division of nephrology on the topic of living kidney donation. In 2012 he did his scientific internship at the experimental nephrology lab under supervision of dr. K. Mirkovic and dr. M.H. de Borst on the effects of infusion of fibroblast growth factor 23 in mice. In 2013 he applied for a MD/PhD program, combining his Master’s in medicine with a fast-track PhD program. In this program he worked on the follow-up of living kidney donors and was one of the responsible research doctors for the TransplantLines study. Furthermore, Marco supervised fifteen students working on their own research projects. The successful completion of his PhD resulted in this thesis.
In his Master’s Marco had internships at the University Medical Center Groningen and the Medical Center Leeuwarden. After finishing this thesis he started working in the Martini Hospital Groningen at the department of internal medicine, as part of his training to become a specialist in internal medicine.
