Completing an English dissertation abroad has been a long and difficult journey for me.
There are a lot of people I would like to express gratitude to, who helped me with guidance, insights, encouragement and support. Above all, my sincere thanks go out to my supervisor Frans de Haas, who has provided me a lot of insights and without whom I could not have finished this dissertation. Frans also set a good example for me as to how to be a good academic and a teacher. Thanks also goes to my second supervisor Maria van der Schaar, who is proficient in Brentano and gave me many valuable suggestions.
I wish to thank the China Scholarship Council for funding me during the four years of PhD. I also wish to thank the Institute for Philosophy, Leiden and LUF for funding conference visits to Athens and China. I presented my work at the conference and received valuable feedback. I would also like to thank Victor Caston and Klaus Corcilius for their insightful talk with me about intentionality during the conference in Gothenburg, June, 2018.
I learned a lot from the many kinds of workshops and reading groups in which I participated. These include Alvaro Cortina’s reading group on Aristotle; a phenomenology reading group on Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception; A reading group on Aristotle’s Physics, the Kēpos workshop in Ancient Philosophy and the Greek reading group on Aristotle’s De Anima organized by Frans de Haas. Many thanks also go to Shenghao Yue, who organized a Greek learning group and volunteered to teach ancient Greek to us.
I also wish to express my gratitude to all my colleagues in Leiden, and to thank in particular Karineke Sombroek, Carolyn de Greef, and Jeroen van Rijen for their efficient administrative work.
I would like to express my gratitude also to all my friends who have helped me. The time I spent together with friends left me with many sweet and precious memories. Thanks to my friend Richi, who helped me with my English. Lots of love and thanks are due to my husband Wei Shi, who gives me never-ending confidence, support and love. He lives in China, and it is not easy to keep a long-distance love.
However, love overcomes everything! My PhD career witnessed our engagement and marriage. Lastly, sincere gratitude to my family: my grandma, my mom, my dad, my brother and sister. I am super lucky to have such a family!
