Acknowledgements

How young children from low-income immigrant families become literate in their second language has piqued my interest for many years. Interest in whether and how computers can facilitate this process, was, for a digital immigrant like myself, the reason to undertake this research.

I would like to thank all the people who have made this quest possible.

In the first place I would like to thank the children who participated in the intervention studies on which this dissertation is based. Their enthusiasm was contagious and inspiring.

All their teachers and school principals were incredibly hospitable, time after time. They made this research possible and have thus contributed to a considerable extent to this thesis. The students who helped to collect and process the data I would like to thank for all their hard work and their drive to make a good job of this. Furthermore, I would like to thank my colleagues for their support, their valued criticisms and advice and the many hours of stimulating discussions. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank my family and friends. Their continual encouragement and support was heartwarming. This dissertation I dedicate to my sister Annemiek, whose warmth and wisdom I dearly miss.
