Seasonable rainfall expected to continue during the outlook period

During the past week, dry but seasonable weather was observed over Central America. Suppressed precipitation prevailed over much of the region, while scattered little to light rains were registered over western Guatemala, southern Honduras, western Nicaragua, and western Costa Rica. Over the past thirty days, near-average rainfall was recorded throughout Central America. Meanwhile, small (< 25 mm) rainfall surpluses were located over parts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. For the Apante, December-April rainfall season, near-average rainfall was received over most parts of the region. However, some seasonal deficits were observed over eastern Honduras, eastern Nicaragua, and portions of the southern Caribbean. Recent vegetation condition products, overall, indicated favorable conditions over Central America, except areas of northwestern Guatemala, northern Belize, and local areas of Honduras and Nicaragua, where poor conditions were depicted.

During the outlook period, model rainfall forecasts suggest a continuation of seasonable rainfall over Central America. Light rains are possible over northern Guatemala, the Gulf of Honduras, Atlantic-facing regions of Honduras and Nicaragua, and parts of the southern Caribbean. The forecast continued rains should aid the dry-season cropping activities over many local areas. As for temperatures, nighttime temperature could drop below-average, which may adversely impact the livelihoods of people over higher terrains.
