Acknowledgments

This book owes recognition to many who facilitated me during the years of my PhD research. I must acknowledge Higher Education Commission of Pakistan for offering scholarships exactly when I sought one. Thanks to Hisham whose informative emails helped me decide to apply for PhD in the Netherlands.

I am greatly indebted to Etty for being the most supportive person academically and otherwise during my years of PhD. I am grateful to Naomi for additional financial support. Thanks to very kind and warm Manuela who takes time to provide detailed feedback and guidance to proceed. I commend Lindy for she has been a great source of knowledge and feedback and that too at short notices.

I appreciate Joyce who was the first one to help me during my proposal writing even before my arrival in Leiden and remained available throughout. Frank was a pleasant addition as a colleague with whom I enjoyed all kinds of discussions in and out of office. Thanks to Fieke who, with her bright and brilliant presence, made me feel welcome and comfortable in S&O.

Many thanks to Christine for her continued facilitation throughout my PhD with several matters connected to my research. Thanks to Max for his

research-related and Dutch-related assistance. Thanks to Manon and Pakistani scholars, especially from Leiden, who facilitated in data collection. I would specifically like to mention Asghar, Sohail, Tayyab, Jameel, and Waseem.

Special thanks to Ibrahim and Tanveer for being reliable and supportive friends.

I owe this achievement to my father. His never-ending quest for knowledge was the exclusive inspiration for higher education. While I was much motivated, it was always my husband who pushed me to reach this target. These two men greatly helped me with data collection and data entry as well. Thanks to Usamah for proofreading much of my writings. I continue to relish my mother’s love and refreshing support as I celebrate yet another achievement.
