Functioning beyond pediatric burns
physical activity, fatigue, and exercise capacity up to 5 years post burn
by Moniek Akkerman1) Pediatric burns should be considered a chronic health condition because of their po-tential life-long consequences – this thesis
2) Physical activity, fatigue, and exercise capacity following pediatric burns should receive more rehabilitation attention beyond the acute care setting, even in children with mi-nor burns – this thesis
3) Burn severity seems not predictive for outcomes of physical activity, fatigue, and exer-cise capacity in the general Dutch pediatric burn population – this thesis
4) Exercise capacity and other relevant health outcomes in pediatric burn patients should be monitored over an extensive period of time
5) in order to direct and optimize burn rehabilitation, it is essential to examine how the various domains of functioning (i.e. body functions and structures, activity, and partici-pation) interact, and how this relates to quality of life
6) to fully understand functioning beyond burns, input from expert patients is crucial within the entire research and treatment process
7) researchers should focus not only on group performance, but also on individual results, especially in small heterogeneous populations
8) For use in clinical decision making, normative reference values on physical fitness outcomes should be based on large groups of individuals with minimal health risks, and not merely on the average population
9) “Every individual deserves and needs the chance to be physically active” – tim shriver, Chairman and CEo special olympics
10) “Knowing is not enough, we have to apply it. Willing is not enough, we have to do it!” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
