The   2

Summer   School   of   the   ITN-‐DCH   project   took   place   in   Rhodes,   Greece  in  the  first  week  of  June  2015.  Apart  from  the  training  activities   organized  for  the  fellows  and  the  parallel  sessions  of  the  Annual  meeting   for   the   partners,   the   meeting   was   also   combined   with   the   Mid-‐Term   review   of   the   project.   As   a   result   the   schedule   was   quite   tight   for   everyone.   However,   due   to   the   excellent   organization   by   Prof.

Moropoulou  and  Manolis  Alexakis  all  the  events  were  successful.  Apart   from   the   well-‐scheduled   sessions   and   the   interesting   presentations   during  the  day,  I  think  the  most  impressive  events  were  the  two  social   dinners   organized   for   all   the   participants   of   the   Summer   School.

Especially   the   dinner   within   the   Palace   of   the   Grand   Master   of   the   Knights  in  the  beginning  of  the  week  exceeded  the  expectations  of  most   people.  The  talks  given  prior  to  the  dinner  made  everyone  feel  welcome   not  only  by  the  organizers  but  also  from  the  local  community  of  Rhodes.

Focusing  on  the  activities  of  the  summer  school,  I  think  that  the  highlight   of   the   week   was   the   workshop   on   “Non-‐Destructive   Techniques   for   Decay   Diagnosis“.   Dr.   Delegou   and   Dr.   Lampropoulos   gave   a   very   dynamic  presentation  that  managed  to  engage  even  those  who  had  no   previous   experience   with   materials   characterization   techniques.   In   the   open  lab  session  their  enthousiastic  spirit  was  transferred  to  the  fellows   who   had   the   chance   to   gain   some   hand-‐on   training   with   ground   penetrating   radar,   a   thermal   camera   (thermography),   and   other   equipment   used   in   non-‐destructive   techniques   for   decay   diagnosis.

Regarding   the   talks   given   to   the   fellows   during   the   afternoon

sessions,   I   believe   that   the   most   important   was   the   presentation   of

Prof.  A.  Nikolaides  on  one  of  the  project’s  case  studies,  the  Church  of

Asinou  in  Cyprus.  Since  I  recently  had  the  chance  to  listen  to  a  similar

presentation   of   Prof.   Nikolaides   during   my   secondment   in   CNRS,   I

think  that  it  would  be  a  benefit  for  all  the  fellows  that  work  on  this

specific   case   study   not   only   to   listen   to   his   presentation   but   also   to

engage  in  a  discussion  with  him  about  the  monument.  Given  the  tight

schedule  this  meeting  was  not  possible  but  hopefully  in  one  of  the  up

coming   ITN-‐DCH   events   some   time   will   be   allocated   for   us   to   talk

more  in  depth  about  this  case  study.
