Electrochemistry: from Sense to Sustainability (ISE 2016) Foreword

The67thAnnualMeetingoftheISEtookplaceinTheHague (Den Haag, or ‘s-Gravenhage as it is formally known), the Netherlands, almost three decades after the last meeting (Maastricht,1987).ThevenueforthiseventwastheWorldForum, convenientlylocatedbetweenthecitycenterofTheHague and Scheveningenbeach.Themeetingwasattendedby1634partic- ipants,representing57countries,including795students.

TheHague,thethirdlargestcityinTheNetherlandsistheseat ofthegovernmentandisinternationallyrecognizedasthecityof justice and peace, having hosted the world’s ﬁrst peace conference in 1899. The Hague is a pleasant, green, and cosmopolitanseasidecitywithanattractivehistoricalcitycenter, manyparks.Itishometomanyworld-classmuseums,suchthe Mauritshuis (with famous paintings of Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rubens, and many other Dutch and Flemish masters), the Gemeentemuseum (with a unique collection of Mondriaan paintings),theEscherMuseum,andtheextraordinaryPanorama Mesdag,a single painting museum with a panoramic view of Scheveningen.

The scientiﬁcthemeof themeeting“Electrochemistry:from sensetosustainability”underscoredthekeyroleofelectrochem- istry as a fundamental discipline for important applications contributingtoabetterandmoresustainablesociety.

The annual meeting started with three tutorial lectures on Sundayafternoon:

The delegates were welcomed by Christian Amatore (Presi- dent), Manuela Rueda (Secretary General), Marco Musiani (ExecutiveSecretary),MarcKoperandMaartenVanBrussel(Co- chairsoftheconference),KarstenKlein(DeputyMayorofthecity ofDenHaag)andGregoryShapiro(indisguise)whointroducedthe audiencetotraditionalDutchcabaret.

Thescientiﬁccontributionsfromtheparticipantswereexten- siveandexcellentinquality.Fiveplenarylectureswerepresented by George Whitesides (Harvard University, USA), Linda Nazar (University of Waterloo,Canada), Anders Nilsson (University of Stockholm, Sweden), Serge Lemay (Twente University, The Netherlands)andYuriPleskov(A.N.FrumkinInstituteofPhysical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, Russia) who presented the FrumkinMemorialMedallecture.

Alongside theplenarylectures,thescientiﬁcprogramof the conferenceincluded52keynotelectures,511oralcommunications and1013posters,distributedoveratotalof20symposia.

Aspecial “Electrochemistryin Action”symposiumwasorga- nizedonWednesdaywithinvitedcontributionsfromspeakersfor theindustry.Thissymposiumwascoupledtospecialexcursionsto thechlor-alkaliplantofAkzoNobel,intheharborofRotterdam, and to the conservation department of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

ThetraditionalconferencebanquetwasheldattheKurhaus,a landmarkbuildingofthebeachofScheveningen.Duringthisevent, thewinnersoftheposterprizeswereannounced.

Wecongratulateallthedelegatesfortheirexcellentoraland posterpresentationscontributingtothehighscientiﬁcqualityof themeeting.Wewouldalsoliketorecognizethestudenthelpers fortheirdedicationandenthusiastichelpduringtheconference.

ThanksarealsoduetothemembersoftheOrganizingCommittee and the Symposium Organizersfor theirefforts in making the meetingasuccess.Theorganizationofthemeetingisingreatdebt tothestaffoftheISEOfﬁcewhoseeffortswereessentialinthe conferencepreparation.We alsoappreciatethehelp ofallwho contributed in any way to the organization, sponsorship and successoftheMeeting.

This (Virtual)Special Issue of the Society’s journal, Electro- chimicaActa,isbasedonselectedoriginalcontributionsmadeat theconference.Selectionwasmadebyaninternationaleditorial committeecomprisingeditorsandguesteditors,oneforeachof thesymposiainwhichthemeetingwasarticulated.

TheSpecialIssuesEditor,SergioTrasatti,coordinatedtheaction of the Editorial Committee, being directly responsible for the reviewprocedure.
